Finally one of the great mystery's is close to being solved.

The BBC Europe correspondent David Shukman reports:
The mystery of what is generally considered to be the greatest of the missing treasures of Europe may be about to be solved.

Two rival teams in Germany and Lithuania believe they have located the Russian Czar's Amber Room, which was looted by the Nazis during World War II.

The Amber Room - often described as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" - is currently valued at about $250m.

Well this article is 5 years old, so apperantly neither of them found anything.

The hunt for the amber room is continuing, in 1997 they found two pieces of the room a commode and a mosaic. As proof of their good faith, the Germans handed these over to Vladimir Putin in 1997 and 1999


A telegram was found which read: 'Amber Room operation complete, object stored in B.Sch. W.V'. Conflicting theories decoded this as meaning the B shaft of a mine at Wittekein Vollpriehausen, near G�ttingen, or as the B hold (Schiffsraum) of the ship Wilhelm Gustloff. An ill fate came to both of these in 1945: the mine was flooded, the ship sunk by a Russian submarine.


Heinz-Peter Haustein, Mayor of Deutschneudorf, Saxony.
Theory: the crates were buried in a mine in Deutschneudorf, as remembered by "Martin J.", an SS man who died recently. Villagers confirm the presence of SS in April 1945.


Jozef Muz�k, Czech treasure-hunter.
Theory: the Amber Room is in Stechovice, Czechoslovakia. Has secret documents, and local accounts from 1945. Last spring, he declared that he was within months of locating the Amber Room.



The reward will be immense - the Amber Room is valued at anything between �100 million and �200 million. If found in Germany it would be returned to the Russians, although the Czechs are making no such promises.


Tantalisingly, two elements of the Amber Room resurfaced in Germany, in the 1990s - a commode and a mosaic. As proof of their good faith, the Germans handed these over to Vladimir Putin in 1997 and 1999.

Meanwhile, the hunt for the world's largest piece of jewellery goes on.

If that telegram was supposedly dating from the war, it's incredibly unusual that such an operation wasn't given a code name. Sounds to me like there's some fakery at work there. And let us assume it IS a genuine message back to HQ informing them of a job well done, why would they need to inform their superiors of the location? Surely they'd be fully aware of this information as it was they who decided where the stash was gonna be hidden in the first place. Military communications about secretive operations don't even contain a fraction of the info about the operation that the one line telegram did.

What you have to take into account is that a lot of these treasure hunting expeditions are financially backed by large consortiums, who only keep the money flowing whilst there is, at the very least, some minor form of evidence that the hunters they've subscribed to are on the right trail. Such a telegram would be the perfect device in such a scenario, especially if the backers were beginning to have doubts about carrying on funding the expedition.
