I doubt its aramaic. Looks more like a stylized form of arabic script imho.

I'm not familiar with Aramaic but the writing examples I see on line look similar to what's on that coin.

Look at how the letter A matches with what's on the coin almost exactly.

Your right they do look almost alike. So possibly an assyrian coin? How exactly does one go about putting a date to these coins? Thanks for the help with the photos as well much appreciated.
I look at these coins and my mind wanders to the thoughts of all the people who's hands these have passed thru up until I bought them.

Thank you for the post. I do believe I am lucky considering I paid a scant dollar for each coin. Who knows what they are worth. I hope to be able to date them.

These are most likely billon tankas from the Sultans of Juanpur, probably Hussain Shah ibn Mahmud, AH881-AH898 (1476-1492AD); Ref Mitchiner 2890-2897 where he cites £3 for nice examples.

You'll find similar (perhaps exact matches) on this page mapage.noos.fr...

I asked on a couple coin forums for you to see if any traders knew what these were. I hope I've set you on the right path to finding out more about your coins.

I have looked high and low for something that can tell me where these coins came from, how old they are, and what the writting inscribed on them means. I first got these coins from an old guy in North Carolina who was at a coin show. He assumed they were american indian coins. But so far as I know american indians did not have coins and these seem a hell of a lot older then a hundred years or so. Anyways I took them to a coin shop here in my town and he wasnt sure other then the fact that they are ancient as in 500-1000 yr old range. So I turn to the ATS slueths in hopes you can help me out on this mystery. There are 3 pictures. Two of both sides of the coins and third of the coins on their side so you can see how thick they are and how they were milled.

whompa when you find them I suggest you find I'd say maybe some velvet or something wrap the coins in it and them if you can find a nice sort of coin box put them in it and try to take them to a coin specialist and if the same conclusion is reached as it has been reached on this thread possibility you might want to call up sothebys or one of the other big auction houses. There is always someone collecting old ancient artifacts.. you could end up set for life if you get a good set price on the coins thats if you want to really part with them.

If I find them I plan on doing just that. I took them to the knuckle head in town who is a "coin dealer" and I use that term loosely as this guy wont take the the time to do jack sh** about helping me with finding the identity of them. My first priority is to find them. I had put them in my wallet to take home and put back in the safe. Some were along the lines they disappeared from behind my credit card and seem to have grown little legs and walked off!

Whompa I suggest maybe even tearing your room apart to find them those coins are most likely worth ALOT and most likely now that you've got everyones attention by showing the coins on here you'd find them and perhaps call a museum. Sometimes museums have people who know ancient texts or the area those coins may have come from.

I plan on tearing my entire house up when I get home to find these coins. So sothebys aye? Would I just call them up?

LOL. Don't go buying velvet and all that
Didn't you read up above? This quote was a very accurate appraisal value:

Your coins are worth about $5 each. You did get a deal, but not like you're thinking.

Ok I found them. And I did read the account. None the less they are possible 5-600 year old coins. I think they could use a little velvet treatment!
