Venezuela is continuing with it's plans to modernise it's military.
It has announced plans to purchase three submarines to add to it's existing two subs, which are currently being repaired.

forbes

CARACAS (AFX) - The Venezuelan navy plans to acquire three submarines, said Vice Admiral Armando Laguna.

Laguna said the Venezuelan government has already received offers from Germany, France, Italy and Russia.

He noted that no date has been set for the acquisition.

Venezuela has two submarines, which are currently being repaired.

Even though Venezuela has a right to build up it's military I'm sure that there are some who will be unhappy about this. I wonder if the winning countries relations with the US will suffer after this sale.

3 Oberon Class subs that canada aquired from the UK , here would be a great opportunity for Canada to unload at least 1.

I think Venezula has the right to own to protect coastal waters( Much like Canada)

Yeah, these?

2005:
The Department of Defence announces that Canada's four Oberon-class submarines are to be sold for scrap for about $50,000 apiece. The navy says the subs have deteriorated too much even to be used as museum pieces.

Well, at least the price would be quite reasonable... It's my understanding that the Oberons were quite good when new, but their replacements (Victoria-class?) have been somewhat lacking in quality.

I suppose Russia could make an offer like "Buy one, get one for free" since they don't have the money or resources to maintain their fleet anyway.

It seems that Venezuela is trying to send a message, but I'm not too sure what it is.

I wonder if this is true or just another report designed to stir and scare the over-sensitive in the US.

For instance; those Mig 29's have been a long long time coming, hmmmm?

Ten aircraft are due to be delivered within 18 months of the contract being signed, which also involves setting up a MiG 29 maintenance center in Venezuela, according to air force officials who outline plans for long-term supply and maintenance. “Future deliveries will be made with the participation of the specialists of the Venezuelan air force in the joint assembly of the planes and their test flights following their assembly on Venezuelan territory,” say letters of intent with Russia.

yeah it takes a long long time to produce and deliever those fighter planes. so submarines just takes pretty much long time if and when Venezuela decides which one they pick for their submarine fleet.

No need to wonder.
One can always do some research and verify, sminkeypinkey, assuredly without entertaining thoughts of your over-use of that alleged US over-sensitivity.

As such, care to express or detail how long in coming? Some may get confused as to what you insinuate, sminkeypinkey.
Are you referencing as early as late 2004, or what, specifically?

- I guess my comment is aimed at those who have cried their eyes out at an imagined 'instant' arming of Chavez's Venezuela.

In actual fact the details of the deal are very vague (depending on whos' report one reads) and the planes themselves (Mig 29 export varient) are a long way off delivery and in any event merely replace the 24 F16c/d's the US supplied to the previous administration (but now apparantly refuse to supply parts to maintain).

Chavez may be bold but he isn't stupid - He has lots of oil and the US isrunning out. Did you know that the three major suppliers of oil to the US are Canada, Mexico and Venezuela?

I would be arming up for protection just like him.

Besides - you can't all be scared of 3 subs can you? You boast about the most sophisticated and expensive military in the world - blah, blah, blah - we can beat anyone up.

Yet you let these statistics scare you.

You can't stop people from wanting a little protection. Especially people who are being talked about like they are the greatest threat since... hm... since Bin Laden.

Boy, he seems to have outlived his usefulness.

Now that iraq is the 52nd state in america we should have a ton of oil flowing in. Plus, the reserves in alaska hold enough for us to use for the next 100years or so.

We arent even close to running out of oil, the market is fixed so that the price wont go down. It's a created crisis, not a real one. Why do you think cnooc tried to buy unocal? To make a ton of money, but the us government couldnt have china unloading their reserves onto us, that would fix the problem!

I imagine the same thing will be said about chavez's offer to sell gas to the poverty stricken areas in the country (aprox 1.25$/gal retail). I don't believe we're currently buying oil from them, we've been trying to destabalize venezuela since the 70s.

Well, i take that back i was wrong.. they're #4 on the list

I recall when Canada bought three subs from a European country.

Didn't turn out so great. Look it up.

No one in this thread expressed any concern over those three subs so what are you talking about?

From the same CBC link
1998:
Canadian Forces announces it has purchased four Upholder-class Royal Navy submarines, which were decommissioned in 1993 when the U.K. decided to focus solely on nuclear subs.
Now given the capabilities of an Upholder class (AKA Victoria Class)

www.naval-technology.com...

I don't think they're going to be launching any nuke strikes anytime soon...... Buy em now while their hot!!

Keep thinking like that, in fact I wish the rest of the world’s militaries though like that, it would make things much easier for us.

Very sane indeed, of course how could you not be if your best friend is Castro.

- Westy just cos Chavez won't go along with the US attitude to Castro and Cuba hardly makes them "best friends".

You might have noticed much of Europe won't go along with that kind of nonsense either, it just means we have something approaching normal relations it doesn't make us fantastic buddies.

Chavez has benefited Venezuela thanks to having good relations with Cuba - the 20 000 doctors Cuba has sent to help Venezuela's poor are testament to that.
- or would you rather they just didn't bother (as per the previous arrangements pre-Chavez) and just left the Venezuelan poor to rot?
