At least 17 people have been killed in a fire in Paris. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in a seven story building that housed African immigrants. More than 200 firefighters helped bring the fire under control, assisting families to escape the burning building. Six children including a baby were among the dead. The cause of the fire is still uncertain, but sources say the building was not in good condition.

Miami Herald
One resident of the seven-story building in southeastern Paris described being awakened by cries from children and adults, then rushing to his window on the building's second floor.

People "jumped out the windows. They didn't care about dying," said Oumar Cisse.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight in the stairwell of a building, officials said. About 210 firefighters worked for an hour and a half before bringing the blaze under control.

Police said they were trying to determine what caused the fire, on a major boulevard in the city's 13th district.

This is a terrible incident. In April another fire in Paris also killed immigrants. Could it be that the buildings they are living in are not installed with proper fire alarms? I wonder how many of these deaths could have been avoided. Police are still investigating why there was a fire in the first place.

I have read that among these 17 victims, there were 14 Children!

And in this house there were living just Africans from Senegal, Gambia, Mali and Cote D'Ivore: all togather 100 Children and 30 Adults.

Right you are. The numbers were not released originally because of the bad press this is receiving. It really is appalling. Those poor people. Apparantly the conditions of the building weren't good and there was overcrowding.

From the Guardian this morning:

The interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, ordered an immediate inventory of all similar buildings, suggesting several may be closed if they are overcrowded or a patent fire risk.

Another aftermath in the problem with European immigration. People are being crowded together into buildings like cattle.

Conditions for immigrants in Paris have never been very good!! I hope that now a little more will be done about it!! Sarkozy wants an inventory done?! It is his policy that encourages these conditions for immigrants!!!!

Instead of posting a new thread, I'll just continue on this one. Latest update to the tragic death of the Parisian Immigrants.

A group of around 50 people walked from the gutted tenement block in south east Paris to the nearby Place d'Italie.

Several in the crowd held banners - one of which read: "Republic, we only ask you for a roof"
