New updated stats:

MB: 907 last time I checked the milibar was at 902... does this mean the storm has gained strength?

Winds are 160mph

Either way, good luck to the people in NO and in the path of this monster.

The lower the number, the stronger. But just for perspective, Andrew was 921.

The pressure has gone up a little and the winds down but still a roaring category 5. There is a good chance of it gaining some strength just before landfall because of the incredibly warm gulf water temperatures. Big hurricanes vary in intensity throughout there life and go through cycles where the eye wall replaces itself, if it is currently undergoing one of those all I can say is WATCH OUT!.

This will be the strongest storm to hit since Andrew if not Camile, if not of all time. Everybody in Katrina's fury needs all of our prayers.

I didn't stay for the manliness factor, far from it. It was for the family factor and thoes I love.

BTW geting about 50mph gusts now, still verry little rain maybe 1/2 inch so far.

I think the eye is still 120-130 miles away from you and the latest info has her slowing down a smidge, so it might be a while until you get the full dose.

Maybe turn your whole bed upside down and make a crush shelter out of it

Good idea, sleep in bag under upsidedown bed frame. Take box springs off and put matress over the upsidedown bed.

Are you going to sleep thought?

If you're under the bed frame you run the risk of being trapped by falling debris.

I was thinking that actually, I probably wouldn't BE ABLE to sleep during this historic storm.

Sleep in shifts with someone standing watch to awaken other members if the need arises. I doubt that I would be able to sleep at all.

If your gonna sleep then id do it in the bag under the bed, but I'd probably stay up for this one, be ready in case you get a tornado bring that tree down or something, apparently theres one on its way into NO just about now, so be ready dude.

ummm I wouldn't sleep right now, situations changes pretty rapidly, the intense red is on the radar is getting close to you now. You may want to use just that mattress as a cover if the windows are breached or the roof goes or if a tornado warning is issued.

If the windows are breached, the roof will go and so will the mattress. Depending on when Mizar's home was built it was built to a certain standard for wind strength. From the pictures I would say no more than 10 years ago so they should be built to pretty high standards; but once you lose the roof ...

If the current standard is still 100MPH then, given Mizar's location, holding on to a mattress would not be wise.

Here's an interesting article; but I cannot discern the date of publication.

www.nola.com...

[EDIT] Point of clarification: Thirty years in Florida on both coasts so I'm not some alarmist posting here.

I'm sorry not to have posted to this thread previously, but I have been constantly hooked on the ongoing real drama.
Hope I don't sound corny, but my husband will be praying for you and yours Mizer as well as Lily and any other ATS'ers that are in harms way.
Please also say a prayer for those people in the Super Dome...I got a VERY bad feeling when I saw them entering.
The power of nature certainly humbles man.
Good luck and God Speed....we are thinking of everyone in NO and the Gulf Coast.
Joey and Ray

Maybe his power is out.
