On Saturday April 3rd, 2004, three weeks after the Madrid train bombings of March 11th, Spanish authorities surrounded an apartment where terrorists (believed to be involved in the March bombings) were hiding out. As the police closed in, the terrorists blew themselves up.

First authorities reported that three terrorists committed suicide, but were not sure because of damage to the bodies. The same article said that the mastermind of the train bombings, Sarhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet (AKA "The Tunisian", pictured), got away from the doomed apartment. Judge Juan del Olmo, the investigating magistrate, even issued an international arrest warrant for five people and Sarhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet,(Ahem,"The Tunisian"). So they were pretty sure he got away.

Two days later on April 5th, reports changed to five dead, including the "mastermind", Sarhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhet, (Dun Dun Duhhh!!!) "The Tunisian"! Two or Three suspects may have fled the scene.

By April 9th, the estimate was switched to seven dead. However, reports of suspects fleeing the scene were left out. A video is found at the bombed out apartment. Three men are seen on it, including the dreaded "Tunisian". The video was made as police closed in and includes threats of further attacks if Spain does not pull out from Iraq.

On December 22nd, the BBC reported that a new "mastermind" had been found. Hasan al-Haski. He was charged with planning the attacks in Madrid on the 11th of March.
news.bbc.co.uk...

On August 17th 2005, a suspect was apprehended that had fled the apartment on April 3rd, 2004. Amazingly, Abdelmajid Bouchar (a wanted terrorist), decided to take out the trash. When he noticed the police he yelled a warning and ran. He got away because he was a "competitive distance runner". I couldn't make this ---- up. There were more than 10 police(some articles say 15) injured in the blast. A "special forces agent" died. Yet another terrorist known to have fled the scene, Mohamed Afalah, is reported still at large. The news fails to mention if Mohamed Afalah was also a competitve distance runner, or if he was helping to take out the trash as the police closed in.

So who is Oceania at war with now?

This slighting of history is way too reminiscent of Orwell's '84. First, the mastermind got away from the blast. Then he died in it. Now he wasn't the mastermind anymore.

Gah!

And people buy it!
