President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have been invited to visit Lybia by leader Muammar Gaddafi, Us Senator Richard Lugar has revealed in a news conference on his return from a two day trip to the country. Gaddafi is keen to re establish and imrpove ties with the west. Lugar was in Lybia after he represented George Bush in Morocco and Algeria for the release of over 400 prisoners of war held by Western Sahara's exiled Polisario Front Independence movement.

U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar, ending a two-day trip to Libya, told a news conference he had held talks with Gaddafi on normalizing relations after decades of estrangement, following Tripoli's decision to abandon weapons of mass destruction.

The United States and other Western countries have been rebuilding ties with Tripoli after Libya accepted responsibility for the 1988 Pan Am bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, and said it would give up weapons of mass destruction.

Other western countries along the the USA have been building ties again with Lybia which were cut after the Lockerbie bombing over Scotland which Lybia accepted responsibility for.

Gaddafi has decided to abandon weapons of mass destruction.

I wonder about the in depth and behind the scenes working of this issue. Up to now Gaddafi has refused to capitulate on his views and has spoken out against the American presence in Iraq and other arab nations. Gaddafi's own palace was bombed by the Americans at a loss of life to Gaddafi's family with his daughter sadly being a casuality and being killed in the blast.

In Apr, 1986, Tripoli was bombed by the United States for Libya's involvement in international terrorism. Casualties included the daughter of Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi.
