Taysir Hayb, an Israeli soldier, has been sentenced to 7 years jail for manslaughter. He was also sentenced to an additional 12 months for obstructing justice. Sergeant Hayb shot Tom Hurndall, a British peace campaigner, and he later died from his injuries. The conviction came after a lengthy campaign from Hurndall's family that charges be brought against Hayb.

An Israeli ex-soldier who killed UK peace activist Tom Hurndall in the Gaza Strip has been jailed for eight years.

Ex-sergeant Taysir Hayb was convicted of manslaughter at an Israeli military court in June for shooting Mr Hurndall, of north London, in April 2003.

He was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter and one year for obstruction of justice.

Mr Hurndall, 22, was involved in protests against the Israeli military in the Palestinian town of Rafah.

He died nine months after the shooting.

Hayb's conviction follows a lengthy campaign by Mr Hurndall's family.

The shooting of Tom Hurndall was a tragedy and shouldnt of occured. It highlighted just how trigger happy the IDF can be and underscores the injustices the Palestinian people experience.

Throwing stones, or even being in a crowd (as Hurndall was) does not constitute a death sentence. Manslaughter charges shouldnt just apply for the shooting of British citizens, it should cover Palestinians as well. Not all protesting Palestinians are terrorists and for the IDF to shoot them is obviously against Israeli law in light of this conviction.
