Interesting idea, but that would mean everytime you wanted to open a gate, you would need to gather those seven people together from seven races... seems inpractical.

As a test, why not grab some crystals and metals of various shapes, sizes and colors, from various parts of the world and place them in the hole to see what happens.
It's possible some of these may trigger some event to occur, may not be at 100% effectiveness but the intent is to see if anything happens.

Maybe these elements might tweak something to a small degree, a small kick in the pants.

Why not drop some Skittles in there too, just for kicks.
