Just remember though, goretex linings only work up to the top of the boot. If you're going to be crossing a lot of streams/rivers etc where the deapth is deeper than the height of your boot, your feet are going to get wet due to water pouring in the top. Goretex boots may not be the best choice here as the take a hell of a long time to dry out compared to leather-only boots. Not an issue if you get to take the boots off and dry them (and your feet) out overnight, but a serious one if you're stuck in the great outdoors for a few more days/weeks.

For shipboard work, I find many of the boots Belleville makes are too damn bulky. The old style U.S. Navy chukka is what I still wear, and had they decided to make them a little higher for ankle support, it would have been the ideal general purpose shipboard work boot. I was loaned a pair of Belleville's to try out, and I felt like I was wearing the boots off of an astronaut's space suit. I still see some flight deck guys wearing very BASIC 9 inch workboots, but cannot find out what brand they are so I can get myself a pair. They seem to have a "cap" sewn onto the steel toe... I want them badly.

All the extra padding and "bling" these kids want inside their boots these days takes an eternity to dry when wet as well. A leather shell on a sole is all I want on my feet when I work.

Danner's Rock, I had a pair in the Army. They were the gortex/waterproof Ft.Lewis boots back in the early 90's. It was a great boot. Now that Danner has an extensive line i wouldn't have a problem buying any pair.

I wore my danners for another 5 years after i got out of the army. I used them when I was a law enforcement officer and all I had to do was have them resoled. The boots were servicable for 9 years.

BATES has some good boots check them out.

Good point that is why our jungle boots had drain holes. I wore the hell out of my jungle boots in Panama and the surrounding AO. The only thing I didn't like about the jungle boots was the steal shank in the sole.

I Usually had between 3 to 5 different pairs of boots, I had the Issue speed lace leather boots, Issue Jungle boots, Issue desert boots, my self purchased Danners, and a pair of self Purchased Cochran Jump boots. We had to have jump boots for our dress uniform because I was in an airborne unit, otherwise i would have never had a pair.

+1 for you, a lot of people whinged about them when we got our lot but mine fit perfectly and were good, hard wearing boots. The application of a little dubbin from time to time kept the leather nice and supple and the water out.

Just remember to take a shower in them when you get them!

If your looking for comfort, support and durability, you cannot go past the Australian brand Taipan. They are a branch off Highmark footwear and produce a range of military combat boots. At the moment i'm wearing DDR4079s and they are by far the best boot i've ever had.

Taipan combat boots, in particular the 'pantone' series feature snug angle support, and a wide forward food bed. Their Dual Density Rubber soles have incredible shock absorption and retain 85% of their original shape after years of wear.

Aussie soldiers will know that the army has severe boot problems, when soldier's feet go down, the army send them to a specialist to be fitted with a pair of Taipans.
