Acting on a tip off after a worker found human remains, police have uncovered the bodies of nine newborn babies in the garden of a house in Germany. The believed mother of the children has been arrested in connection with the deaths. It is not clear whether the arrested woman has more children and it is understood that the babies were born between 1998 and 2004.

The bodies were found on Sunday in the garden of a house in Brieskow-Finkenheerd, a village near the Polish border, a spokesman for prosecutors in nearby Frankfurt an der Oder, Michael Neff, said.

Neff said the 39-year-old woman was believed to be the mother of the children and was being held on suspicion of manslaughter. Her name was not released.

There has been a spate of similar finds over Germany and neighbouring countries in the past months including a baby boy's body found on a recycling conveyor belt and a baby in a plastic bag with it's throat cut.

In Austria a couple was arrested in connection of four babies found dead in a freezer.

This is horrendous.

OK this woman would have to have these babies one right after the other, remaining in a perpetual state of pregnancy if the babies were all full-term.

As if no one would have asked, "Hey, what happened to all those fetuses you were carrying around the past few years? Weren't you knocked up like, oh, eight or nine times?" Besides, there are conflicting years reported here, I'm reading 1988 as well as 1998.

In the ground or in flower pots? In a garage in a fishtank? Come on. Why do they report when they can't even get the story straight?

Really. The chances of this actually being what is looks like on the surface are slim to none. I'd like to see more on this before I believe a word of it.

Timeline does not add up. Perhaps this news can be updated shortly with more information that may validate the information.

This is a pretty sickening story. But it makes me wonder, how does a woman like that get knocked up that many times in such a short amount of time?

This is pretty sad.
Were the babies squeezed to death at all?

I figure with that many bodies she may have been trying to make baby oil....

I couldnt find an english speaking news source so I will quote from one of Germany´s most renowned magazines, DER SPIEGEL:

The correct timeline is from 1988 until 2004. She has 4 living children, at ages of 20, 19, 18 and 1 1/2 years. During this time she was married twice, and lived in a nearby city (it was her parents house and yard where the babies were found). She is said to be somewhat fat and wearing loose clothing, wouldnt be the first pregnancy that goes totally unnoticed.

They were found at all of the places you mentioned. The house of her parents has a big garden, thousands of square meters. Behind the garden there are unfinished garages. They were abandoned for several years, and so a huge pile of crap amassed there. The first baby was, indeed, found buried in sand in a huge fishtank. The other babies were found in nearly all other large containers in this area. Police and coroners are still searching. Of course the probability is high that even more can be found.

Really. The chances of this actually being what is looks like on the surface are slim to none. I'd like to see more on this before I believe a word of it.

Sadly this seems to be true. No indication of 3rd party involvement has been found so far. Since the corpses are from newborn babies, that should rule out some child molester ring getting rid of evidence. Of course one has to await forensics and genetic tests before one can be sure about the origins of the babies. The 3000-souls-town lies at the polish border, a region where unemployment is high and many people live on welfare. The woman seems to always have been "a bit out of line". She was jobless, too, had ever-changing partners and alcohol problems.

I would guess that low intelligence, hopelessness and despair mixed up with the fear of her children being taken away by the social institutions, and twisted her mind into killing and denying her children instead of admitting that she couldnt do it alone. This woman needed help, but regrettably noone realized that.

Oh damn I was so sad when I read this thread but my wicked sense of humour made me laugh at both your jokes.

If you didn't make me laugh like that I would have cried, it is so sad. I look at my 6 and get sadder, its so hard being so poor, having people look at you like you are too stupid to know what a birth control pill is, not being able to afford to go to the towns show or to do anything that costs money. Even scraping for school excursions and Not even being able to afford school uniforms.....constantly washing the kids only two outfits or hunting down their only pair of shoes............ahh yeah its hard.....But to kill your child?

But we manage, they say love doesn't make the world go around but it does. I wouldn't swap my lot for the world. I could never ever kill my babies for any reason....though my 6 year old son is slightly pushing those boundaries today

Sheesh Im not having sex for the rest of the year and most of next year because history says as I have children born in 96,98,00,02 and 04 then the likelhood of me falling pregnant again soon ready for an 06 birth is a probablity not a possiblity. But if I did, meh another bundle of love to hold and snuggle and watch grow and learn and.......to watch them live and enjoy life.....

It goes back to that one point, of get help but I think more was at play here, one baby to hide is one thing...but nine?

How cruel really, what was going on in her mind. Thats more than an issue that is extreme. How could you kill such a soft ball of helplessness and love?

How could you?

Netchicken, expected more from you. That was in poor taste.

I have my own little rugrat and stories like this break my heart.

Yuk.

It's a sad state of affairs but discoveries such as this occur often around the world in developing nations.

Is it more of a tragedy because it happened in Europe? Would yet another discovery of such in China or Indonesia or the Sudan make news, or get such sensationalism?

Or is the lesson to be learned that (relative) prosperity, government sponsored socialism, and perpetual intereference by nanny states cannot prevent neglect, tragedy, or evil as much as many people wish? And the lesson to be learned is that only we can help ourselves?

sometimes, in the face of unspeakable evil, a laugh isn't the worst thing.....

its stories like this that make me lose my skeptical scientific slant on everything and come to the conclusion that the devil is loose in the world.
