2 from my list so thanks for putting them up first.

The Beatles - In My Life. Surprised it wasn't mentioned yet. I recall a Rolling Stone issue where they asked musicians for their take on the best song ever written and this was, hands down, the favorite.

Other folks already mentioned some of my other honorable mentions but I'll add a couple more.

Layla - Dereck and the Dominoes.
I go to the barn because I like the
or
No One's Ever Gonna Love you - band of horses. give them a listen.

I just got turned on to band of horses last week. Very good stuff. I am really like Funeral, but all of their stuff seems to strike a chord with me.

they're amazing. Stephen King turned me on to them. He did a year end music article in Entertainment Weekly and mention I Go To the Barn, saying it was the best love song ever written. (he also turned me on to Drive By Truckers - Gravity's Gone is awesome)

the new cd has some great songs on it. There's a Ghost is awesome.

Check out Fleet Foxes too. Very similar sound.

Oh, wow. So many amazing songs out there. I managed to narrow it down to a three-way tie. It was actually pretty hard.

- I Don't Want Solidarity If It Means Holding Hands With You by Defiance, Ohio.

- People II: The Reckoning by Andrew Jackson Jihad.

- Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure by the Weakerthans.

Agreed. And I was gonna post it as one of my picks too! My boss made a burn CD for me, of Band of Horses, and I fell in love with "I go to the barn because I like the" Seriously, is one of most beautiful songs I have ever heard... I think i posted it in the Favorite Lyrics thread too...

I also like "Satisfaction" the one done by Cat-Power. She does this amazing acoustic version, its slowed right down, and her voice is just captivating in that song. I didn't even recognize the song until a few words in, because her take on it, is so different, but awesome.

"Into Dust" by Mazzy Star, is also on my list of Beautiful Songs. Most of her stuff is very pretty, but this is my favorite one of hers.

Just to name a few!

- Carrot

I dunno if its been said(doubt it) But my pick would have to be Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Not the version that Johnny Cash did necessarily, but i would have to say that version aswell. If you take a look at the video. It tells johnnys life in a way.It was the greatest honour in my opinion for him to choose that song as his last big production.Atleast i think it was.

Good choice(s)! I had totally forgotten about those. The Johnny Cash version was the first time I saw a remake that was in the ballpark of the original! Very different than the original, but really good! Kudos!

i am an 80s girl.. this song .. .. i LOVE it..
Style Council... You're the best thing..
I could be discontent and chase the rainbows end
I might win much more but lose all that is mine
I could be a lot but I know I'm not
I'm content just with the riches that you bring
I might shoot to win and commit the sin
Of wanting more than I've already got
I could runaway but I'd rather stay
In the warmth of your smile lighting up my day
(the one that makes me say, heh)

'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me or my world
You're the best thing that ever happened - so don't go away

I might be a king and steal my peoples things
But I don't go for that power crazy way
All that I could rule but I don't check for fools
All that I need is to be left to live my way
(say listen what I say)

I could chase around for nothing to be found
But why look for something that is never there
I may get it wrong sometimes but I'll come back in style
For I realise your love means more than anything
(the song you make me sing - yeah)

Someone said SOMEBODY by Depeche Mode.. And i agree with that one too

I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone wholl stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
Shell get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
Shell hear me out
And wont easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact shell often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me
Aaaahhhhh....

I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and
With every breath
Someone wholl help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I dont want to be tied
To anyones strings
Im carefully trying to steer clear of
Those things
But when Im asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
Ill get away with it
Aaaahhhhh....
