This is a tough one. It truly is. I can't pick one, so I'll pick three.

Mark Knopfler - The Ragpicker's Dream
Mojave 3 - To Whom Should I Write
Red House Painters - Have You Forgotten (Vanilla Sky Version)

I might well agree with UK Wizard, Cannonball is a beautiful song. Damien Rice is great, I love his music. But I'll have to say "Tuesdays Gone" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I admit my opinion is biased, Skynyrds my favorite of all time.

Well, most all of my other choices (from Evanescence, Sarah McLachlan, and others) have been mentioned, so I'd add:

"Nightswimming"- R.E.M.
"Yellow Ledbetter"- Pearl Jam
"Wonderful Tonight"- Eric Clapton

and almost any track off of Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds "Live at Luther College".

Although this isn't top in my list of "beautiful songs", I feel it should be brought to your attention.

Band:Lacuna Coil
Song:Swamped

I seriously think you should download it... i mean... err... buy it.
The female vocals (Cristina Scabbia) are absolutely amazing. I could listen to her sing for eternity. Plus, she's soooo fine.

Europa by Santana? Its cool because its like the Autumn Leaves jazz standard.

And yes. Bach is the greatest composer who ever lived.....

I'd say Bach's fugue in G minor is one of the best. Sounds great on classical guitar.

Killswitch Engage - Rose of Sharyn

This song is amazing; the riffs and lyrics are spot on. I recommend it to any music fan.

Lyrics:

Numb and broken,
Here I stand alone,
Wondering what were
The last words I said to you
Hoping, praying that I'll find a way
To turn back time,
Can I turn back time?

What would I give to behold.
The smile the face of love,
You never left me,
The rising sun
Will always speak your name.

Numb, i'm broken
Here i stand alone.
Wondering the words,
The last words i said to you
It won't be long
We'll meet again...

What would i give, to behold
The smile, the face of love?
You never left me
The rising sun
Will always speak your name

It won't be long, we'll meet again
Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting.

I mourn for those who never knew you
I mourn for those who never knew you

It won't be long, we'll meet again
Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting.

It won't be long, we'll meet again..
It won't be long, we'll meet again..
It won't be long, we'll meet again..
It won't be long, we'll meet again..

Jeff Buckley, Coltrane, Royksopp... great choices guys,

But for that extra big lump-in-the-throat, Billy Bragg's "Between The Wars" does it for me. I live in Scotland but think the sentiment applies everywhere and anytime

I was a miner
I was a docker
I was a railway man
Between the wars
I raised a family
In times of austerity
With sweat at the foundry
Between the wars.
I paid the union and as times got harder
I looked to the government to help the working man
And they brought prosperity down at the armoury
We're arming for peace, me boys
Between the wars.
I kept the faith and I kept voting
Not for the iron fist but for the helping hand
For theirs is a land with a wall around it
And mine is a faith in my fellow man
Theirs is a land of hope and glory
Mine is the green field and the factory floor
Theirs are the skies all dark with bombers
And mine is the peace we knew
Between the wars.
Call up the craftsmen
Bring me the draftsmen
Build me a path from cradle to grave
And I'll give my consent
To any government
That does not deny a man a living wage.
Go find the young men never to fight again
Bring up the banners from the days gone by
Sweet moderation
Heart of this nation
Desert us not, we are
Between the wars.
