Article's a little old, but relevant.
This brings up the possibility of US intervention...
We all know about Bush's plan to "dominate" space. He plans on denying access to space from other nations. I think he's getting a little anxious.
The ESA already has a manned mission to Mars planned, and NASA has to build a 'sterile faclity' to protect the people from extraterrestral diseases.
