Neurologists at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden have managed to harvest functioning brain cells from stem cells obtained from living adult patients. This research lends hope of more effective treatment of degenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, Alzheimer's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Huntington's Disease.

The scientists believe the manifold implications of the research make it among the most significant advances in neuroscience, as it provides direct evidence of synaptic transmission between neurons grown from stem cells. Dr Langmoen commented, "This creates a basis for study into how to harvest a few cells from the brain of a patient with a particular disease, cultivate healthy cells in the lab, and then transplant the normal cells back into the patient."

The importance of this research and finding a successful manner of treating these illnesses can't be stressed enough. If beneficial use can be made of stem cells obtained from adults (instead of from fetuses), then hopefully stem cell research will gain even more support and the controversy of it will be put to rest.
