Japanese scientists have unveiled the most human-looking robot yet devised - a "female" android called Repliee Q1.

She has flexible silicone for skin rather than hard plastic, and a number of sensors and motors to allow her to turn and react in a human-like manner.

She can flutter her eyelids and move her hands like a human. She even appears to breathe.

Professor Hiroshi Ishiguru of Osaka University says one day robots could fool us into believing they are human.

Repliee Q1 is not like any robot you will have seen before, at least outside of science-fiction movies.

She is designed to look human and although she can only sit at present, she has 31 actuators in her upper body, powered by a nearby air compressor, programmed to allow her to move like a human.
Before Repliee Q1, Professor Ishiguru developed Repliee R1 which had the appearance of a five-year-old Japanese girl.

Its head could move in nine directions and it could gesture with its arm. Four high-sensitivity tactile sensors were placed under the skin of its left arm that made the android react differently to differing pressures.

The follow-up has the appearance of a Japanese woman. To program her motion, a computer analysed the motions of a human and used them as a template for the way Repliee Q1 moves.

She can be designed to follow the movement of a human wearing motion sensors or to act independently.

"Repliee Q1 can interact with people. It can respond to people touching it. It's very satisfying, although we obviously have a long way to go yet."

Professor Ishiguru believes that it may prove possible to build an android that could pass for a human, if only for a brief period.

"An android could get away with it for a short time, 5-10 seconds. However, if we carefully select the situation, we could extend that, to perhaps 10 minutes," he said.

pretty awesome, and also creepy in a way, it be like Ghost in the Shell. they be fast and strong. androids in police and military organizations, sex toys, assasins (no doubt perfect for it), androids to replace love ones lost. but still i like to see how far the human race can do on androids.

imagine the possibilities of this android. If programmmed properly it could be used to commit terrorist acts. However, it could also end up being like Arnold in Terminator, a superstrong military robot.

Also, not to be offensive, but how do you think christan groups might react to this.

. . . but I didn't realize it until days afterward.

Seriously. It has always seemed goofy for Robo-geeks to attempt to mimic the human form. Biological movements are so complex and "high touch." It is a shame to waste high tech efforts on something that is natural for any human.

If you have a fancy computer, wouldn't it be better to map the galaxy, or model the financial markets, instead of trying to make a real-life imitation of P. Diddy's butler?

Also, I have a sneeking suspicions that these android-makers are really fantasizing about the ultimate sex-toy. I mean c'mon. That droid will never make more than 12 bucks an hour working at Starbucks. We all know you secretly plan to run a "robo-Ho" prostitution ring out of your garage. Just look at all the nerds lining up around the block.

Well, despite the obvious jokes, this is very good. There are a number of sides to science, one of them being beauty. Everything in nature is astoundingly gorgeous (scientifically and mathematically) and while some may be inclined to think that if it gets the job done so what, it is very important that something look nice. It's just as hard to make a robot look like a human as it is to make a robot that acts like a human. I am all for this sort of advancement.

the picture makes the android look real but you could tell the diffrence up front for sure.but thats really close who knows how advanced theyll get in 5 years.

Leave it to the Japanese to specify exactly what "sex"their android is.............

(coming from the country where porn is legal, yet depictions of pubic hair is not, is it really that strange?)

5 years isn't that long.

You did read the part that said all she can do is sit and fluter her eye lasher...right. plus she needs a freekin air compressor.

theres several advanced robots out there that is my opinion are way better then this.

I'm not really sure if I would like to see andriod people in a few decades or not...and I would make sure there programmed so they dont think there humans, I would make sure that they understand they are, and always will be, below us humans on the totem pole.

but for robots to actually "pass" on someone mistaking them for a human in real life, that will be (i think) 30 or more years.

Yes...that was my first thought as well. Especially with comments like this from the article:

"Repliee Q1 can interact with people. It can respond to people touching it. It's very satisfying, although we obviously have a long way to go yet."

>for robots to actually "pass" on someone mistaking them for a

I'm not so sure...I've met plenty of people who couldn't pass a Turing test. I bet in five years the problem will be getting the androids to seem dumb enough to pass for human.

Have you ever seen Blade Runner? Harrison Ford fell in love with one of these things. Do you reckon women are on the way out as sex objects and being replaced by these andriods? We might actually have to start liking women for their intelectual skills and personalities. Wouldn't that be something?

yeah, but what if one of the motors malfunctions during a "trick" ? that would be a tough one to explain in the emergency room !

what is the application for the android ? I didn't see any.

household helpers ? entertainers ? ATS mod ?

We're now on the path to solving the problem of all the virginity that plagues ATS guys!

The best feature is that you won't lose any points with the android chick for showing up wearing your pocket protector. Or being 40 and still living in your mother's basement. Throw in an attachable monitor so you can surf ATS during foreplay and you guys will be in Heaven! Now if only they can program her to play Dungeons and Dragons and attend Star Trek conventions with you and she'll be perfect! jk!

i don't understand, what problems would christian groups have with this? i know whatever you're going to say should have been obvious and i'll curse myself for it but i'm just curious what you're thinking.

Actually, it comes with a compressor . . .

A good android could come in handy a nanny. I bet it would get used in PR situations. As a nurse, a sales rep, telemarketer, etc.

Could a penitent confess to an adroid? After all, it could be pre-programmed to assign penance. Hmmm. And it would keeps secrets.

How would an android lover work, anyway? If you had to program it by stating its likes and dislikes, it wouldn't be very spontaneous. And I imagine it would be REALLY expensive.

And then you'd have human prostitutes trying to pass themselves off as robots, in order to command a higher price . . . heh heh.

Were's the coin slot, oh wait I found it. That sort of leads to the Christian groups overreacting.

On a serious note, the human face on a robot may be deciving, the point is it is a machine. It has no emotions, feelings, only artificial one. I doubt that they will get that advanced, they would be used mainly in doing repeative tasks we won't do, like a door greeter at Wal-Mart.

It may not come in my lifetime but I sure hope they get them to market before i retire. It would be great to get off work and come home, the house is clean, the garbage has been taken out, my supper is on the table and not only hot but delicious and when I click on the tube to catch my favorite show and she starts yapping about how her day went, I can just reach over and turn that b!tch off.

YES, The future is looking good.

Well, now that everyone understands why i'm divorced and living alone, i'll move on to other things.

To be honest this strikes me as being quite.. disturbing. Even though I love the idea of androids... the resemblance to humans is amazing.. I expected when i click on the link to be some sort of human shape.. not someone that actually looked human.

I'd like to have one as slave rather than sex-toy...I prefer a real woman.

They do look so real it's SCARY!
