An Indian oil platform is on fire and 300 may be trapped. The fire broke out after an oil rig collided with the platform. Television reported that many people had jumped into the sea. Rescue operations are underway.




Major fire breaks out on Bombay High oil platform, 300 may be trapped


A fire broke out at an oil platform off the west coast of India on Wednesday after an oil rig collided with it, officials said.

The oil platform in the Bombay High offshore oil field produces 100,000 barrels per day, the chairman of platform owner Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. (ONGC) said.

Another ONGC official said rescue operations were underway, but he did not say how many people could be trapped. Television reports said many people had jumped into the sea.

BBC: Fire breaks out on Indian oil rig


A fire has broken out on a major oil platform off India's west coast - there are fears of many casualties.

India's Oil Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar told journalists that up to 300 people may have been trapped on the platform, Reuters news agency reports.

"There's bound to be some loss of life and injuries," Mr Aiyar said.

"We had a major fire and the platform has been completely destroyed"

Two navy helicopters have been trying to rescue workers but have been hampered by the flames.

It said that some helicopters that might have been used in the rescue operation were grounded because of severe flooding in the region.

"The BBC has been sent photos of Wednesday's fire on an oil platform off the west coast of India by a UK oil worker employed in the field. The platform was completely destroyed."
