Hmmm .... wonder what the circumcision rate is in Africa
compared to the USA? I think it is done more often here
and Africa has a much higher AIDS rate. Wonder if there
is a connection? Probably too many variables to know for sure.

Circumcision 'helps to halt HIV'

Foreskin cells are thought to be more susceptible to HIV

New research suggests circumcision could be effective in preventing the spread of HIV among men.

The study of more than 3,000 men in South Africa was done by the French agency for Aids and Viral Hepatitis.

The data, outlined at a conference in Brazil, shows male circumcision prevented about seven of 10 infections.

??

would that be male circumcision or female circumcision, or both?

i really don't think there is a comparable demographic,
Africa ~ USA ?
Africa ~ China?
Africa ~ SE Asia?
Africa ~ eastern Europe?

[just maybe Africa ~ S. America *?!?*
but SA has a lot of Portugese & Latin & Catholic influences
so one cannot realistically make linkages ]

there's a popular folklore legend that the military puts saltpeter in food
to 'calm the savage beast'
maybe 'CARE' or the 'Food-Rescue Missions' serving war-torn Africa
should be coordinated with the WorldHealthOrganization,

Well Africa has a higer Muslim popultation per capita than the USA right?

And In Islam, like Juaism circumcism is seen as a must (i islam it its done in puberty not birth) but the AIDS rate is higher... this is just my understanding of course...

It might be higher because the conversion rate and the death rate are about the same - population going down at the same time. And I'm serious.

There's a lot weird practices going on in certain African aboriginal areas - for instance the one town where the people's custom is to have a man assigned as the "widow-keeper" (I'm not sure what his "official" title is). He goes around "servicing" the widows of the town...unfortunately, this town's widow-keeper has AIDS so he's infected every widow in the community.

There's just not enough evidence to support that, warthog.

There are enough links on the thread you mentioned to put that particular theory into question, at the very least.

Anyways....on with the topic!

There's more info about the circumcision debate here

Wee exerpt:

Public health experts have been piling up evidence that circumcised men are at far lower risk of contracting HIV -- if they are free of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) -- than uncircumcised men. One of these scientists has estimated that circumcision, as practiced in 15 African and Asian countries, has prevented some 8 million HIV infections.

But some are not so convinced

More about the study itself

The Catholic men I know (husband, family members) are all circumcised.
My Lutheran ex-husband was circumcised. I don't think this is 'reserved'
just for religious reasons. As far as I know, it's a popular thing to do in
America for health reasons.
