Australian prime minister Harold Holt dissapeared while having his usual morning swim in 1967.

36-years on they are finally going to have an inquest to try and solve this mystery.

There are many rumours about his death.

Many far fetched, but there are also many questions left unanswered. .

(1) That he was picked up by a submarine.

(2) The CIA were involved, as this was around the period when Pine Gap was just Being Built

(3) That it was to do with vietnam.

Victoria's State Coroner has begun a fresh investigation into the death of the former prime minister Harold Holt, who vanished while swimming nearly 36 years ago.

Graeme Johnstone has told staff to gather information on the disappearance near Portsea on December 17, 1967, and will consider a public inquest.

Under the law at the time an inquest could not be held without a body. The probate application on the estate was made on the "presumption of death", but under the Coroner's Act, 1985, a coroner must now investigate suspected deaths, including drownings.

Police have checked old files and have found 103 cases of suspected drownings where bodies were never recovered. Holt's name is on the list that has been submitted to the coroner

The conservative politician's disappearance at a south coast beach became Australia's whodunnit equivalent to the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Among the most spectacular conspiracy theories advanced over the years was the suggestion Holt, 59, was spying for China and was whisked away by frogmen to a waiting submarine. Other theories suggested it was a planned suicide or a shark attack.

Apparently they are re-investigating due to a law change. At the time of his disappearance in 1967, an investigation could not be held w/out a body, but 36 years later they have decided to look into this further.

Actually the idea that the CIA did it is common here. At once stage even a politician said it (I think it was our ex prime Minister iin one of his oratory moods)

The American Christopher Boyce described CIA covert operations in Australia aimed at bringing down the Labor Government of Gough Whitlam. Boyce was sentenced to 40 years solitary confinement for his refusal to stay silent on the matter.

QUOTE:

"There is profoundly increasing evidence that foreign espionage and intelligence activities are being practised in Australia on a wide scale I believe the evidence is so grave and so alarming in its implications that it demands the fullest explanation. The deception over the CIA and the activities of foreign installations on our soil are an onslaught on Australia's sovereignty."
- GOUGH WHITLAM to the Australian Parliament, 1977
