1st time seen an earthquake here!

i hope this is not a prologue to an event gonna happen, i know its been here all day on the seismograph but i aint see a rumble here before but could this be the beginning of things that will start mr yellowstone off ?

if you look at this map from the USGS, you'll see Montana regularly has small shakes, what is rare about this 5.6 is it's magnitude.

how come something has triggered this size of seismic event now, do you thing its just normal or do you think something is brewing under the earth to yellowstone and down to california, is the plate getting stressed from something ? if it is it could start a crazy chain reaction ??

that I don't know, maybe some of other members can speculate further. But the area in general (west coast) seems to be shaking a bit. A big one is bound to happen, just where and when I have no idea, but I hope it's not yellowstone.

yeah, it seems odd why montana is shaking, there must be trouble under the ground, lets just hope its destressing its self and all will be ok, worth keeping an eye on ys and maybe msh ?

would you say that the montana quake a stirred a reaction to another plate ?

The depth question (on the MT quakes) is rather curious... How populated is the region in general? I mean, I've never heard of Dillon or Twin Bridges, but that means nothing.

I'm just north of Montana, up the slopes of the rockies. We are considered stable here, but get the odd tremor of 3.0 -3.2. As far as I know Montana is pretty much the same, so I'm a bit freaked seeing the size of these.

As to population, it's pretty thin around there. The entire state has about 900k people.

I guess since they are all occurring at the same depth one could speculate that they are all related, probably aftershocks of the larger 5.6???

This is a very important hot spot on our planet and always bears watching (or is that, "always being watched by bears") This is Montana......

Any major activity in this cauldera would have worldwide repercutions and push our atmosphere beyond its limit to sustain our current lifestyle. Years of crop production would be lost due to climate change after a major event like what is possible from Yellowstone. I hope this is just a minor rumble and not a sign of future activity.

I think my major concern right now is the stress along the Juan De Fuca Plate and the Cascadia Subduction Zone. www.pgc.nrcan.gc.ca...

This fault could have a megathrust event at any moment and destroy a large part of the Pacific Northwest. And following this faultline down past Oregon, you find a connection to the San Andreas Fault.
A chain running the entire west coast of North America is over-due for a slip or re-adjustment and the loss of life and economic losses could be profound.



So just to put this all together...............

Could pressure from the stress of the continent being subducted on the west coast be a direct link to increased activity in Montana?????
