In a joint report released by the U.S. Defense Department and State Department, criticism have been made about the quality and loyalty of the new Iraqi police. In the rush to put in place an Iraqi police force criminals and "former" insurgents have been trained and recruited.

Insurgents and other criminals have infiltrated Iraqi police ranks due to poor screening procedures by U.S. forces, according to a joint report released Monday by the U.S. Defense Department and State Department.

"Recruitment and vetting procedures are faulty," said the report from the inspectors general of both departments.

"Despite recent improvements, too many recruits are marginally literate; some show up for training with criminal records or physical handicaps."

What problems are being stored up for the future ?

Corrupt police ? Terrorists acting from within the Iraqi establishment using insider knowledge, training, and weaponry ?

This is not just a problem for the near future and the occupation. When foreign troops have gone home any fledgling Iraqi democracy will still be stuck with the police force they've inherited.

How does the article's non-mention of "former" equate to or have anything to do with the mention of infiltrated?

Anyhow, a more rigorous vetting and applied background checking can limit the problem. If I am not mistaken, a year or so back, the UN was subject to a bombing, which was found to be because they [ie: the UN] had failed to do proper background checks, etc. The UN bombing was done by a couple of 'insurgents' [or whatever PC term the BBC wishes to use] who had infiltrated their security ranks.

This is a legitimate concern. Maybe the government itself has been "infiltrated" by the same like? If the security forces are, then it would be safe to assume that the re-structured Iraqi military is likewise "infiltrated"? Btw, how much intelligence is required to be a police officer in Iraq?

It appears that "infiltration" is just not for spy's these days.

Isn’t this pitiful?

What a surprised, if you take in consideration the amount of jobless people in Iraq, and also that "Terrorist and Insurgents" "criminals" are still Iraqi people.

No, no a surprised at all.

I got an Idea! Let give the jobs to any Iraqi exile to go back to Iraq and work for their country.

Does anybody think it may work?

just gives you a good idea of how "sick" the culture in the area is.

As long as the enemy is willing to exploit it's own people and abuse any respect or trust given to the people by any head of state, leadership or occupation, they'll get in and cause problems.

Also shows more of the true face of the terrorists. Just like organized crime "infiltrates" police and government. The "religion" and other rhetoric are camoflage for the mobsters to use, in order to gain international sympathy.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, for all intents and purposes, it *is* a duck.

If it looks like an extremist Muslim Mafia...

Remember after the fall of Siagon and all the Vietnamese refugees that came to the US.

Are ther going to be hoards of Iraqee refugees flooding America? Will there be Insurgents among the refugees?

What kind of Pandoras Box has this war opened. If the infrastructure in Iraq can't identify their enemys, how can their ever be a stable govt. or any kind of civilized system in Iraq. I predict outright civil war with the US caught right in the middle.

Who planned this war anyway?

The only reason we have not seen a hoard of Iraqis refugees is because the US has the people stuck in their land, if given the opportunity they will be flooding into the US now.

Rather than been killed and murdered in their own lands.

Who cares anyway.

The land that the Christian God favored over any other land in the entire world to start the human race. Yes religion is a powerful tool used by everybody alike.
