Saakashvili the gambler...
The Beleaguered President: High-stakes gambler who risked his country and links with the West
12 August 2008
Mr Saakashvili in recent days has looked like a man who bit off more than he could chew. It's still unclear who started this messy little war, with
each side pointing accusing fingers at the other. Russia has clearlybeen spoiling for a fight, but it seems hard not to conclude that the vital hand
in a very risky card game was played by Mr Saakashvili himself when he ordered a full-on assault of South Ossetia last Thursday night. He called Mr
Putin's bluff, and Mr Putin, with some trademark harsh words, laid down a full house – not just repelling the Georgian assault on South Ossetia but
launching attacks all over Georgia.
I'm still puzzled by the western media's lack of response to the Georgian massacre of civilians in Tskhinvali. It's like it never really
happened...

Bush's War in Georgia
"Georgia could have used the years of Saakashvili's presidency in different ways - to build up the economy, to develop the infrastructure, to
solve social issues both in South Ossetia, Abkhazia and the whole state. Instead, the Georgian leadership with president Saakashvili undertook
consistent steps to increase its military budget from US$30 million to $1 billion - Georgia was preparing for a military action." Naturally, Russia
is worried about these developments and has brought the matter up repeatedly at the United Nations but to no avail.
Israeli arms manufacturers have also been supplying Saakashvili with state-of-the-art weaponry. According to Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz

Abkhazian units have started operations against Georgian troops in Abkhazia
Abkhazian units begin operation in Kodori Gorge
12.08.2008
Abkhazian troops have started an operation to squeeze Georgian troops out of Kodori Gorge, Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba told Itar-Tass.
The information was confirmed by the Georgian Defence Ministry, which said the operation was launched at 06:00, Moscow time.
The minister said that before Tuesday the Abkhazian Air Force and artillery have been delivering missile and bomb strikes on military objects in the
upper part of the Kodori Gorge. Units of the regular troops and reservists of the armed forces of Abkhazia are taking part in the operation on
Tuesday, according to Shamba. Please visit the link provided for the complete story.
Abkhazia is not interested in peace talks with Georgia...
“But we made the conclusions for ourselves that there is no point in talking with the Georgian side after what has happened in South
Ossetia,” he said. “We have tried many times to somehow look for ways of the dialogue, but we were increasingly disappointed and understood that
this is senseless. Now these barbaric actions and shameless lie at last tore off the mask, and showed the vanity of such peacekeeping projects and
senselessness of this whole project. It is not worthwhile to talk with this regime at all. Force should be met by force,” Shamba said. Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

So did they Discharge, clear, erase, or cancel the spetsnaz?
Or is this just an example of sub-par reporting?

Georgia denounces the treaty on Russian peacekeeping mission in Abkhazia and declares Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.

We made a decision, along with denunciation of the Russian peacekeeping mission in Abkhazia, I said that to the US president and other world leaders

Will Russia pull out of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, if they are replaced by peacekeeping troops from the UN or EU? If Russian troops pull out of

Abkhazian troops have "liberated" the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia.
Abkhaz Rebels Exult Over 'Liberation' From
Georgians
August 13, 2008
Jubilant rebel troops proclaimed the "liberation" of Abkhazia as they surveyed a remote gorge abandoned by Georgian forces, who dropped weapons,
ammunition, and clothes in their flight.
[---]
"Abkhazia has been completely liberated, there are now no Georgian troops on our territory. Abkhazia has reinstated its territorial sovereignty, we
are just happy we have peace," Alexander Melnik, the unrecognized state's defense minister, told Reuters.
Russian troops did not appear to have been present before or during the assault. This correspondent has not seen a single soldier in Russian uniform
since they pulled out two days ago.
"They left just before the operation started," Melnik said. Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

Norwegian journalists interviewed people in Tbilisi. The people were crying because they've heard from relatives and friends in Gori, that hordes of
criminals were now raiding, robbing and raping the people of Gori. When the Norwegian journalists asked who's to blame for this, they all shouted:
"Saakashvili!". Then they said that Saakashvili is "a complete idiot" and that he should resign!

Peace Plan
Medvedev signed a French-brokered peace plan today. It was already signed by Saakashvili. However, it seems like someone had changed the document that
was signed by Saakashvili, and something is missing in the document. Someone seems to be gambling here. Who changed it? Saakashvili or the US? Very
risky. Don't they want peace?
Russian president signs Georgia peace plan-2
16/ 08/ 2008
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed on Saturday a French-brokered plan on resolving conflicts in Georgia, aggravated following Tbilisi's assault
on its breakaway South Ossetia on August 8.
[---]
However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday that the document signed by the Georgian president differs from the peace plan worked
out by the Russian and French presidents.
"We are somewhat bewildered by the fact that the document signed by Saakashvili differs from the document worked out by the presidents of Russia and
France, so the issue is still to be specified via diplomatic channels," Sergei Lavrov said.
He said the document signed by Saakashvili lacks the introductory clause. Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

Here's an interview with Saakashvili on CNN. Interesting to hear him saying that Russia leveled Tskhinvali in order to blame it on Georgia. I don't
believe him. Anyway, here it is:

Interesting read. The perfect wrong war.
South Ossetia: The perfect wrong war
August 14, 2008
By now, days after Georgian forces stormed the capital of south Ossetia and Russian units counter attacked across the breaking away province and
beyond; a devastating war has spread across the Caucasus causing death, destruction and displacement of populations. All wars are terrible -- even the
legitimate ones where country, freedom and survival at are at stake. But this war is particularly unnecessary, could have been avoided and above all
is wrong; in fact I call it the perfect wrong war.

In that video, Saakashvili actually says that "Russian bombs" leveled the "peaceful mountain town" Tskhinvali totally. As if it was a Georgian
city inhabited by Georgians. Did the Georgians use Russian bombs when they attacked Tskhinvali?

An entire Jewish Quarter has been wiped out as a result of Georgia's military offensive in Tskhinvali. Witnesses in the South Ossetian capital
say there's hardly a home standing in the area where the city's Jewish population lived.
