Bad Press helping?

Is it possible for a video game to recieve such negative press that it would actually boost sales? Obviously if a game was receiving bad press about how much it sucked, well that would hurt sales. What if the game was on the receiving end of a rumour/press that it acutally casued violent blackouts.

I tried searching google, but came up pretty much empty handed. I am aware of the bad press that Grand Theft Auto recieved, but are there other video games?

Bad press, can certainly be good press, if the product is thought to be taboo, etc. Just look back to when Mortal Kombat came out, with spine ripping, etc. Sold quite a bit after those stories....

Grand Theft Auto is a pretty cool game i think i played it once or playe dsomething similar not sure.
