A Beaten Man

I’ve been killing for a long time
So long I think I lost my mind
Right and wrong just fade away
I live the night and sleep the day
My friend will come to visit me
Who he is you cannot see
To have him I would sell my soul
‘Cause without him I have no control

I’m a victim here of circumstance
He pulls my strings and makes me dance
When we met he was my friend
Told me it would never end
I remember that fateful day
But now he will not go away
Oh I wish that I were free
And in touch still with sobriety

But here I am, alone and high
Wishing that I would die
Ease my pain and rest my mind
You see I’m in an awful bind
My nights are swift, the days drag on
And so they will until I’m gone
I thought I was wild and free
But it finally got the best of me

Who will come to see my stone?
Who will cry and plead and moan?
When I can never ever bleed
What will my inscription read?
“Here lies a man who didn’t try
He let life just pass him by
He denied his friends when they came
And when he died he was the same”

The currents are pulling me down
Trying to drown
Should I fight my way free
Or die out at sea?

The harder I strain
The less I gain
I should just give in
Wash away my sin

What’s this?

I start to surface to my surprise
The top of my head
My eyes
My nose
My mouth

I can breath!

Oh no! Another wave.

And down I go
Along with the flow
I cannot break free
Of the vicious cycle

A child was born late last night.
Dumped by his mother, let's follow his plight.
Unsheltered, unclothed, his body so frail.
He was exposed to the wind and the hail.
To life he clings, no reason why.
Fate is inevitable, soon he must die.
Shivers uncontrolled, his body so blue.
Resigned to his fate, nothing he can do.
Soon now his wails will come to a cease.
Soon in his face, nothing but peace.
His spark is extenguished and his struggles end.
His short life spent without a friend.
How can God let such things take place?
The innocent babe suffered much disgrace.
What did he do to deserve the pain?
He was an unblemished soul, without a stain.

I look for answers in the eyes of strangers
But its all to no avail
Because inside I know it's storming
When I start to feel the hail

I wake up in the morning
Feel the sun upon my skin
But it is so cold inside
And I wonder where I've been

All I want is to be held
By someone who will not leave
But each time I think I found it
I find that I have been deceived

Like a ripple in the water
My life goes round and round
Sometime's I feel I'm drowning
And cannot make a sound

They say you get what you deserve
And reap just what you sow
But I'm so tired of planting
Right before it's time to go

Darkness falls
All lights dim
Mothers tuck weary children into bed
Fathers put away their papers
They all settle down for a good nights rest
But what of us?
Those who are creatures of the night
Those who sleep not at night
Those who wander down shadowy sidewalks
And travel deserted highways
Who frequent taverns and all night diners
Who are employed on the graveyard shift
We rest not during the dark
But long for mornings light
To signify the end of our day
Forget not as you dream
Some still do not

Distorted perception
Lifes little deception
Everything's different
But still all the same

Rose colored glasses
The view of the masses
My image is bent
Am I still sane?

My sight is now darkness
My thoughts are all heartless
I've just got to vent
'Cause I'm feeling no pain

I'm ranting and raving
'Cause my thoughts are enslaving
My anger is pent
Is this my bane?

There was a time I loved a girl
With hair of gold and skin of pearl
Her smile was bright, my sunrise
But stormy days lurked in her eyes

I couldn't help my love for her
I stuck to her like a burr
The bliss we had the first few years
Almost outweighed all the tears

My idyllic life was soon to break
My peace and joy replaced with ache
A tornado formed beneath her skin
And breaking free it sucked me in

I came to, my life was shambles
Finally I escaped the brambles
But honestly, I know it's true
I loved her much, sometimes still do

I love your poetry Keymaster, somehow "Sight" fits my mood today and speaks volumes to me. But all of them are very good and your style of writing poetry is one of my favorites and imo very similar to my own.
