UFO landings in the 60's?

I was reading a book a while ago (forgot what its title was) that mentionend a secret Gov. Project back in the 60's to fake Alien contanct. What would happen, accoring to the book, is that the govrenment would seal off a rural area with a small town, then fake a landing. Apperently, the results of the expriment were quite violent as riots and mass panic broke out in the areas that had been sealed off.

I would be interested in knowing wheather or not the expriment really did happen or it was a work of fiction fabricated on the part of the author?

Im pretty sure that would be fiction, as keeping something like that secret, especially in multiple areas with somewhat of a population, would be quite difficult. logistically it just does not work.
