AD/BC

not sure if this fits in the conspiracy section but i figured there'd be more people here that would be able to shed some light on this. The BC, i think stood for before christ, even though now i think they use a different acronym. however, im just curious as to, at what point did someone say, 'right we're going to start counting from the birth of christ, and all the years prior to christ we'll call BC and the years after AD'.

i've also heard that jesus is thought to have been born closer to 4 or 6 AD. i think its a common misconception that BC and AD were introduced as soon as Jesus was born. this is because it wasn't even until he left galilee that he was actually recognised as something more than human. so when and why was the BC and AD concept introduced?
