The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has offered their support to Spaceshuttle Discovery by allowing the shuttle the option of an emergency landing in Australia, if it's required.

Australia could be called on to make a military airfield available if the Shuttle Discovery needs to make an emergency landing.

"In the unlikely event of an emergency, it is possible that Defence may be asked to provide assistance," a spokeswoman for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) said.

"Under Australia's international obligations, Australia is required to provide any reasonable assistance to ensure the safe exploration of space.

This is just another good sign for Discovery, further enforcing the safety standards NASA are adding to this shuttle launch. This can only be another plus for NASA, adding more saftey for the crew of the ageing shuttles.

It makes me proud as an Australian to see that our Defence Force is ready to provide assistance in space exploration now and in the future.
