person. He was the only president elected four times. Roosevelt led the United States through its worst depression and through its worst war. He died
just 83 days after becoming president for the fourth time.
State senator. In 1910, Roosevelt accepted an invitation from state Democratic leaders to run for the New York Senate. He joined the Democratic Party
chiefly because his father had been a Democrat. Roosevelt's task seemed impossible. The Republicans had controlled his district for more than 50
years. Roosevelt called for clean government and declared his opposition to "big-city bosses." He surprised veteran politicians by winning the
election.
