!!ALERT!! All Members Read: new avatar and signature rules soon

<<  1    2  >>

Topic started on 20-8-2003 @ 03:18 PM by William

Our current avatar and signature guidelines were created 9 months ago when we were getting only about 300 to 400 new posts every day (and about 60 visiting members a day) and it was easy to stay on top of infractions. Recently, however, many members are regularly abusing the allowance for 5 lines of text and one small image in their signatures, as well as the maximum file size of avatars.

Coming soon, there will be new guidelines for avatars and signatures. We're discussing the guidelines now in the Cosmic forum for staff... but the likely result is a fixed number of text characters and no images in signatures. We are also looking at smaller file size and dimensions for avatars.

These new restrictions are not a function of controlling bandwidth, but maintaining optimum readability and performance of message threads. All too often, we see signatures that are far too large disrupting the flow of message threads (and it's becoming too time consuming to send every member a U2U).

When the new restrictions are posted, there will be a 48 hour period allowing you to correct your signatures, then the restrictions will be automatic.

I agree, you have to have rules on sig size. I'll be interested to see what you come up with (and if mine is ok)

I like William's purpose built stuff.

I think his current Arnie for Guv avatar is appropriate in its width and could define the max. dimensions especially the column width.

Also notice how 'Supreme Skeptic Overlord' as a custom user title matches it nicely.

I wouldn't want to lose any of that dimension to accommodate the links on the right.

In preparation of some new guidelines... the signature space is now limited to 100 vertical pixels as a test.

Let's try this and see how it works... whatever you can fit in that space should be fine... maybe.

What does everyone think?

I can answer that if you dont mind.

I have asked William a few times he didnt reply cos he was busy and then he happened to be in the chatroom and i asked him about this he said "no more custom status cos there were 3 ATS staff doing it and it was hard work."

100 pixels is 6 lines as you can tell by your own signature.
And if any of you should change your avatar because of size limitations, you can always decrease the size of it with paint, and use the ATS upload function to store the image on the ATS server.

I believe it is about 6 lines... I could be wrong but I think that is close.

It's not so much that it's hard work, but with an average of 25+/- new members per day, the requests are just too numerous. We're also averaging well over 1,000 posts a day and that is alot of posts for mods/admin's to read.

To me that would be hard work seeing that all or most requests are met.

You're absolutely right, drunk.

Imagine the extra work required when 200 new members join per day. Or 2000.

BTW, if you keep drinking at a great rate of knots, I have to guarantee you that your physiological "Active Member" status will change of its own accord.

From knowledge, not personal experience.

I do beleive my avatar is small enough...and I have no signature, becasue i believe very little strongly enough to attach it to the bottom of every post...
but infinite...i have a question for you (and this is not a slam on your personal taste, at least its not meant to be) Do you really like Insane Clown Posse that much, or is it a joke? Becasue I have seen many funny, or even silly Avatars, (i personally hate mine, but it has a certian stoic quality). But Insane Clown Posse?
