Colonizing the Moon or Mars?

A buddy of mine reminded me of the age old idea of colonization recently. While growing up I always read stories about the possibility of transforming a nearby planet to a sort of hospitable environment like the one we enjoy here on Earth.

And then if you buy into the possibility of the whole idea of colonization there are yet more questions to ask and decisions to make:

Colonize the Moon before Mars

So I guess my ultimate question is: If we can and when we can, which should we colonize first, the Moon or Mars? And of course, how can we go about doing this successfully in the best way possible?
