A question for Evillution. What do you have against Clifford Stone? About 11 years ago I worked at a movie company. I had convinced my bosses that a UFO/abduction story would be a great interest to the movie going public. So I put the story out there that I was looking for people who had experiences while in the military. I had gotten calls from lots of strange people with wild claims of woman having sex with Lizzard alens and a person who claimed he saw a flying refrigerator flying around his back yard. (an Editor of a UFO magazine) I had read somewhere that an Army sspecialist was possibly being forced out of the Army due to his interest in UFOS. Anyway, once I contacted Stone and asked specific questions on specific UFO or Alien events he would fedex me all kinds of formally classifies documents. This man truley believed in what he was doing. I certainly didn't feel he was any kookier than other people I spoke to. He never asked for money. He also sent me his book: UFO's Let The Evidence PSeak For Itself. Anyway, if anyone has a current phone number or email for him please let me know. Thanks!

Sorry netzombie, you're question should be addressed to Off_The_Street. All he/she did was respond from a particular quote in my signiture, that's all.

Here's the rant he posted earlier:

Sgt Clifford Stone, The Disclosure Project, is a liar and a scoundrel.

Absence of evidence may not be evidence of abxence, but it is not "denied evidence", either. Absence of evidence is ... absence of evidence. Nothing more and nothing less.

It's stupid and false comments by this "Clifford Stone" bozo that destroys the Disclosure Project's credibility. And that's too bad, because some of the Disclosure Project's information is worth a second look.

Sure, I can explain how it isn't science, but first I want to clear up that ANY astrophysicist will agree with what I said, hell, when we learned about them quickly in a few of my courses the professors explicitly said it isn't science (intro to astronomy, modern physics)...

Following the scientific method, you need direct observation, which you can't do with black holes because you can't see them, haha. Everything with black holes is indirect...

It's mainstream because they do exist, and they're interesting. There's no doubt about their existance, it's pretty clear. That doesn't necessarily make the study of them science. We go by a strict rule of what science is and is not.

I hope I was clear, but if I'm not, google scientific method. Read it up, and you'll realize that alot of things aren't really science.

Indeed...

Their endorsement of such loons as Meier hasn't helped their cause either... Heck, I'd wager there are some in the Project that actually believe Adamski's claims...
Such reasons are why one shouldn't expect too much to come from this group's aims.....

I was in grad school purportedly to be a scientist, and had my funding cut for apparently asking too many questions ... I would say the large majority of research scientist in the academic world are about ego, money, and science in that order.

It's really not their fault though it's how the system works (publish or perish). You need to have a substantial ego to have the audacity to get published regularly, even if it's making claims that are incorrect. You need to have funding to pay the bills, and then well yes actually you do need to have some science!

I was a bit taken aback I used to think that scientists were pure and all little einsteins working in secret labs for some Spock-like good of mankind, and all that ... but on the topic of alien life forms I think the original post'er is not entirely correct.

There are tons of research projects (and tons of money spent) searching for alien life forms. There is certainly a solid contingent of scientists that DO believe in extraterrestrial life forms. You should read works by Carl Sagan, for example. He was the biggest proponent of this sort of thing.

We have huge arrays of radio telescopes scanning the universe for communications over a wide range of frequencies. Our space missions continuously scan new planets for any evidence of biological life forms.

While we do not quite have the technology that we do in the movies, we are indeed seeking life forms. The probe Voyager (launched when I was your age) has now left our solar system, and brings with it messages of communication in all major languages of Earth. While the likelihood of little green men ever finding this thing and making any sense of it (or declaring war against us as in the recent movie with Tom Cruise) is quite slim, there was a line of thought in the 1970's that we were not alone.

30 years later, we still seem to be alone, and so many people have given up on this search. Frankly, I think it's quite unlikely that there is another advanced life form simply because we haven't found it yet. If there were another advanced life form, that was more advanced than us, they would understand our limitations, and already have sent messages of greetings to us many years ago, on a frequency that we understand. If there is another life form that is lower than ours, then we have nothing to fear.

People like Tom Cruise believe that there is some sort of advanced life form that is SO advanced that perhaps they are waiting for us to catch up to them in terms of international peace so that we don't all blow ourselves up fighting for the first intergalactic treaty with the aliens ...

Grad student, are you saying that you attended graduate school under some sort of government grant? Why would your comments cause you to lose your funding? That hardly seems fair to you.

On a personal note, where exactly did you grow up? I went to high school in Prince George's County (Suitland HS) and took my undergrad at the University of Maryland.

grad_student, you seem more bitter about a situation than giving your actual opinion. You must've never had an internship or undergrad research experience before to know what grad school was going to be like.

You must've not been pulling your weight to have been cut.

The answer to the question begs the question. By limiting the answer to :"we have found bacteria in a rock from Mars" only reiterates the standard scientific approach of absolutely requiring empirical observable data and absolutely ruling out anything outside our observability. That is what IS wrong.

Hello,

Do you actually have proof that he's a liar ? OR it is just your intimate conviction ?

The promblem with them is that most that are out in the publics eyes are scrutinized or strong armed. We only know what they think were ready to know. They learned from the whole War of The Worlds scenario.

The biggest question about the Martian rock is not the bacteria but even more so, the question of how a rock identified as Martian (by constituent analysis presumably) wound-up in Antarctica. I don't think they even have a believable hypothesis for that.
