im assuming the evil UAV goes nuts; and they have to get their new talons out to destroy it right???

because that talon is not a UAV
its manned notice the cockpit lol

From what I've been able to tell from the promos the "Evil UAV" is just another "Talon" with an AI bot onboard.

The pictures shown are not of the UAV in the movie. Those are the manned fighters (the Talons or whatever they are called) the UAV is differnt from what i recall in the trailers.

And this movie looks so dumb. It might actually have been a good movie if they didn't use a done to death plot. I'm so sick of robots and AI going evil because of something like a lightning strike (which is what happens in this movie). There is no logical reason for it. All it does is make project advanced technology in a bad light and make those who are ignorant to the subject more fearful to the ideas of AI and robots and the like. It's too bad the writers of this movie wern't clever enough to come up with something more thought provoking. Sorry for the rant like post.

For those who haven't seen the trailer, you can see it here [quicktime needed] www.apple.com...

EDIT: Here's a pic of the "UAV". Yes it has a cockpit... but that's so the AI/Robot thing can see... or something... movies.about.com...

Yes the plot is overdone and it sounds corny and it probably will be a box office dud, but I have to see it anyway, because the aircraft just looks too cool.

Yes this movie had potential to be good but to use Jessica Beal and Jamie Fox, no offense but they don't make great navy pilots and from what I’ve heard the script is deed the only thing thats good is the CGI and jets.

IMO it will hardly make any difference; India is onlya tip of the iceberg.

sorry for taking this trhread off course; my apologies.

Getting back any details on how much money was spent on this movie ? and who built the Talon ??

I dont like the look of this film, its too "were americans and we are fighting for freedom....yada yada yada" Ive seen the trailer and aparently it goes psycho because of lightening, WTF, after all that money spent the US air force would forget to make it able to take a lightening hit, gimme a break.
The only thing thats good about this film is the fact the Incubus have a kick ass soundtrack, lol.

Good initial post intelgurl

I'm sure we're going to be hearing a lot more about this. So far the military (US in particular) have shied away from allowing autonomous systems to make kill-decisions - Air Dominator and LOCAAS were both originally supposed to do their own target discrimination but man-in-the-loop was added, apparently as a result of friendly-fire incidents. However, not everyone will necessarily take this approach (China?) and with swarming micro-UAVs the sheer numbers will mean that they have to be given greater autonomy. This may be nor more than declaring temporary-defined 'free-fire zones' in which they can kill anything.

As to evil killer UCAVs, well, that rather depends whose side you're on .

AI research is currently batting up against some serious limits and is only creeping forward at present. But as we gain a greater insight into the brain I suspect that more techniques will become available. And new technology like quantum computers will change the rules entirely by offering alternative means to dealing with problems which traditionally require 'intelligence'.

PS Any thoughts about the weapon system shown in thr trailer?
Is that supposed to be a mega-vortex-ring fuel-air-explosive?

I just read some speculation that the F-35 may be the last "manned" USAF aircraft produced. The trend seems to be 30 or more years before a replacement is made, so would 30-40 years be a realistic time frame for the USAF to start this transition?

No, it's been officially stated by the DoD(can't remember where or when) that the US Air Force will never permenantly make a transition from manned to unmanned, there will always be manned fighters, no matter what.

No, it wont be. Its possable that its the last Fighter/Bomber thats manned, but aircraft in general like transports and whatnot...will continually be manned.

I think, by the time the Raptor needs to be replaced which will be around 20-25 years from now that its replacement will be unmanned. and as for jets that are pure bombers...they have allready made the transition, The X-45C is likely to be the USAF top pick for a new bomber...it cant go faster then the speed of sound, but other then that it can carry 4,500 lbs of bombs, its stealth, unmanned, and Darpa just recently shelled out a few more million for boeing to make it have air re-fueling capability.

'Stealth' director touts film's realistic action

new article :

>Link< As part of the marketing for "Stealth," the upcoming naval action movie starring Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel and Josh Lucas as fighter pilots, the flick is being screened at naval bases around the country (USA ?). The world premiere at the Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, Calif., even featured a flyover of F/A-18 Super Hornets.

There was no such fanfare when the film--about a trio of hotshot pilots trying to get control of an unmanned fighter jet with a mind of its own--was screened at Great Lakes Naval Base on Thursday. There was, however, a rousing ovation after the final scene. Director Rob Cohen ("The Fast and the Furious," "XXX") credits the positive reaction to the realistic action. But he bristled at the suggestion that the film, which opens nationwide Friday, could be viewed as an infomercial for patriotism.

"It's American in substance because we're the only country that has this technology," he told Armour & Co. "But this is not a `rah-rah, go America' movie. There are some ethical questions raised and some human questions raised. I truly believe that's what people are picking up on."

also those black fighter jets are based on a fictional jet from the game called Ace Combat 4.

The X-22, right? I never beat everything so I was not able to fly that aircraft but I believe it was pretty big.
