US scientists have unveiled details of a project that aims to develop Star Trek-style ray guns that could keep "security adversaries" out of DoE nuclear sites.

The Department of Energy is turning to old Star Trek phasers to protect its 103 civilian nuclear plants.
Energy weapons capable of harmlessly stunning intruders are being developed and should be in general use by 2008. But many experts warn they will be inadequate and unnecessary for the real security dangers nuclear plant guards would face.

Set phasers to stun?

Its not really amazing weaponry, but it isnt practical until it is as lethal as a bullet, which is much father off.

You can defend your self from most energy weapons better than (chemical) projectile weapons.

Weapons that produce plasma-explosions would be the future for energy weapons, but projectile weapons will be the mainstay armor piercing round, even when we eventually have spacecraft.

Lasers and soundwaves are quite interesting and useful, but their something about lead being launch at you at 2000 FPS that just never gets old....

"Fire the laser!"
"Ow my eye....thats bright!"
