ROME (Reuters) - After deadly rush-hour bombings in Spain and Britain just over a year apart, Italians and other U.S. allies in Europe are asking themselves: who's next?

One group calling itself the Organization of al Qaeda - Jihad in the Arabian Peninsula described Rome as "the capital of infidels" in a menacing message on Friday.

Spain blames al Qaeda for last year's Madrid train bombs and London's police chief has said Thursday's London attacks bore all the hallmarks of the loose Islamist network.

A vocal European proponent of U.S. foreign policy, Italy is a repeated target of Islamic militant threats.

Two different groups claiming affiliation to al Qaeda have warned of attacks on Italy within the past 24 hours alone.

"These threats need to be taken seriously," said Vittorfranco Pisano, a retired American army colonel and Rome-based terrorism consultant.

"Italy is the closest ally of the United States in continental Europe and has become far more active in international affairs."

Italy dispatched extra plain-clothes police to guard public transport, heightened security at airports and said more than 13,000 "sensitive sites" were under special guard. But for many Rome residents, an attack seems inevitable.

"It will happen. Rome is an important city, it's home to the Vatican. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, but eventually," said Rita Pesce, waiting for a bus.

After the United States and Britain, Italy is the third largest Western member of coalition forces in Iraq, and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi acknowledged after the London bombings that Italy's role in Iraq left it "exposed" to attack.

Denmark has also sent troops to Iraq and found itself threatened along with Italy by the previously unknown "Secret Group of al Qaeda's Jihad in Europe," which also claimed credit for the London blasts.

Denmark's Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller said terrorists would inevitably "slip through the net" and warned all European nations were ultimately vulnerable.

Poland, which has about 1,700 troops in Iraq and commands a multinational division, played down the threats.

"I wouldn't succumb to emotions because some group, known or unknown, has mentioned us on the Internet," President Aleksander Kwasniewski told public radio.

Ordinary Spaniards still have painful memories of the March 2004 train bombings in Madrid, which killed 191 people. An Islamic militant group claimed the attack, saying it was punishment for Spain's then involvement in the Iraq war.

Three days later, Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was elected. He withdrew troops from Iraq.

Even France, which won support in the Muslim world for opposing the Iraq war, is warning that it too could be a target.

French security experts say the risk is high because it shares intelligence with Washington and London, and has helped leaders in its North African ex-colonies fight Islamic radicals.

well so which nation should be next to be targeted? i say the next target may be Italy, unless something happened before the next attack like lets say France captured or kill a main Al Qaeda figure and the terrorists are mad and decides to put France on the top of the list.

I think it's going to be the U.S., but here's the kicker, it's going to be northern U.S. and will affect Canada as well. Canada is well known to be opposed to the war in Iraq and will have to be persuaded to participate. It will be nuclear or on it!!!!!

i don't know what happend above but....

Claims by the group alleged group “Secret Organization of Qaedat al-Jihad in Europe” also include a warning to Italy and Denmark (however it is not authenticated as yet).

But there is some organization and method arising to better classify targets and nations by the ‘jihadists’ , setting priorities, targets and the like:

Yey!! I am going to post my Italian thoughts here as they roughly relate to the thread. Last night, I got up to about 45% through my latest book: Angels and Demon by Dan Brown, the author of the Da Vinci Code. Whilst touring Western Europe, Eastern Europe, England and Ireland for 5 months recently I was suprised to find EVERY young traveler reading the Da Vinci Code. Even my skeptical straightass, nonbelieving sister asked to borrow my Da Vinci Code book to read 3 days ago. Do you believe this!!! Anyway, whilst reading its prequel book Angels and Demons I was shocked to read how explicitly researched illuminati and conspiracy theories had been written into this commercialised book. Namely illuminati history incorporating Gallileo, US presidents, DAMN, they even told the public about the US one dollar bill and the pyramid!!! This kind of made me annoyed. Annoyed that there are going to now be so many w.ankers attempting to become conspiracy theorists purely due to the fact that they read an interesting fictional book, and are longing for more of those sweet fictional words that they desire. They aren't longing for truth, and they might not even believe it. Anyway, the next part of the book that startled me was THIS!!! The book was written/published in 2000 and 2001, assumingly before September 11 and before the birth of the word and concept of large scale terrorism and its globalised propaganda as we see today. In the book the illuminati 'terrorists' (yes they mentioned this word) planted extreme extreme explosive antimatter below vatican city whilst the vatican city are electing a new pope whilst as the old pope has just passed away. The illuminati terrorists contact all the media so they can publicly murder, one by one, the four kidnapped archbishops, next running to become Pope, one by one, in front of the whole world. They assimilate this the public executions that used to happen in Rome in places such as the colloseum and intend to do it as revenge for 4 murdered illuminati scientists a few centuries ago. This makes me conclude on two points: 1. The book was written just before the New Age (pre-september 11) perhaps as some kind of guide or predicition. The real vatican pope died very soon after almost exactly as in the same circumstances!! Also, soon after the book was written the first public executions in Iraq (beheadings etc,) happened in almost exactly the same way, being put onto worldwide media to attract attention and due in the same concept (i.e. in retaliation for US soldiers killing other Iraqis in Iraq). Although no anti-matter or anything was placed under the Vatican (that we know of???) during the new pope election, Italy is one of the next targets according to the media for terrorism. Maybe the book Angels and Demons was written and globally publicised to desensitize people to events that will unfold, and divert attention away from mainstream attacks. I.e. if someone tells someone that they suspect an attack on the vatican others can just say noo you've been reading that damn Dan Brown book again and be criticised. Maybe they will target the vatican somehow?? Or the book was somehow used as a desensitization tool in a way whicih I mentioned above. Otherwise I don't really know how that book containing illuminati/bilderberger/freemasonry stuff would have been uniquely released to such a mainstream, global audience.

According to the above mentioned link in previous post ranking human targets by grade of importance for attacks by some ‘jihadists’

1) Americans
2) British
3) Spaniards
4) Australians
5) Canadians
6) Italians

I would attack the port of Europe: Rotterdam.

I would try to hamper ships getting into the harbour. Perhaps with mines or blowing several ships up and thus use theire wreckages as roadblocks.

Since we are being asked to speculate where the next atrocity is going to occur, I'm going out on a limb and say it's going to be either Germany or France.

My thinking is this...since 'Al Q' has decided to plan their attacks to provoke and sustain the 'War on Terror', it would solve a lot of problems if those countries became embroiled in the conflict. Both have large capable militaries which could help in widening the scope of battle.

This would have to happen at a time when the incriminations are at a peak over the recent bombings in London and while the sentiments of the Germans and French are most susceptable to change.
