A top al-Qaida suspect arrested in Pakistan could have vital information about possible terrorist attacks on Britain, intelligence sources believe.
British security and intelligence officials are seeking information from Abu Faraj al-Libbi, believed to be number three in the al-Qaida leadership, to find out what he knows about any operations planned against Britain or British interests abroad.

Mr Libbi had no direct contact with al-Qaida sympathisers in the UK, officials say. But, as the controller of a number of overseas networks, he would be in a position to know what attacks, if any, were being prepared against Britain and other western targets.

"He masterminded operations and had oversight over funding," an official said, describing him as "top of the [al-Qaida] machinery".

MI5 and MI6 officials have yet to interrogate Mr Libbi, preferring to leave initial questioning to the Pakistani authorities. But British anti-terrorist sources are anxious to find out as soon as possible what he knows about al-Qaida's networks.

The US is also keen to question him.

The New York Times reported yesterday that Mr Libbi, a Libyan, was still in Pakistani custody and would not be handed over to the US quickly.

It quoted the Pakistani foreign minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, as saying: "Until all the issues are cleared, there is no question of him being handed over to anyone else. Anything relevant to American security is being shared."

could the terrorist attacks could have prevented? maybe if they knew how to gather intelligence right. in anicase this is another example of being behind and not being vigilant.

I'd be willing to betcha this is a very false story, and nothing but lies.

This is not meant or directed to you, the poster. Lots of stories will come out now about those who knew in advance. It makes what happend more beleivable and points the finger at AL-Qaeda, of course

Doug Hagmann of the Northeast Intelligence Network has posted a developing story which indicates one of the people involved was a released Gitmo detainee

and the cuppie doll goes to:
yeah... IMSO...
thanks to the war on "terror" we now have lots of new AQ wannabies...
and they will all take names like the rising vengeance of AQ, or the super secret aqua teen AQ, or the underground empire of AQ...

and of course, a guy in prison for the last year would know all about this plot, that wasn't even claimed by a legitimate AQ connection...
(the secret european division of AQ sounds like a copycat... if they were AQ, then why not say AQ... not secret european blah blah blah...

Sad to say that was written right on the money.
With paranoia level at an all time high, its like looking for ones keys for a half hour an then finding them in your hand.

Reading this article knowing that Britain was named makes me the sadder having read it.

The New York Times reported yesterday that Mr Libbi, a Libyan, was still in Pakistani custody and would not be handed over to the US quickly.

There's only one logical response, bomb Iraq!..again, i guess.

This is just more reasoning propaganda in cause of making the new Gantanamo even more active for the Iran war the UK will now join America in.

These bombings are reference points, not Terrorism. They are creating their own reasoning so in 5 years they can say 'because we were attack' etc etc.

Didn't we learn anything from 9/11 and the war on Iraq?

It's not about Terrorism at all, if it was then this London bombing just proves they are making more and it's impossible to stop. If it's true the group was European, Al Qaeda or not, then are they going to start bombing Europe now? Of course not.

They are trying to drum up support for an offensive and are going to write the play as it being a defensive so it sells on Patriotism.

Expect France or Australia to get bombed and/or threatened this month.
