WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Defense Department is struggling to determine the right mix of bombers and other warplanes to fight China if it ever became necessary, President Bush's choice to become the next Air Force chief of staff said on Wednesday.

Moseley said the right mix of long-range strike capabilities was "certainly one of the things that we are struggling with" as part of a sweeping U.S. defense review carried out once every four years and currently under way.

"That is at the top of my list ... long-range strike and the ability to do that for this country," said Moseley, the vice chief of staff up to replace the retiring Gen. John Jumper.

Retired Air Force Col. Walter Boyne, a former director of the Smithsonian Institution's Air and Space Museum, said Moseley likely was referring to the warplanes -- manned and unmanned -- needed to take out command posts, radar installations, surface-to-air missile sites, air fields and military headquarters. Many such targets are deep in China's interior.

Moseley's comments reflected U.S. concern about mounting Chinese investments in ballistic and cruise missiles that could hold forward U.S. bases at risk of attack in places like South Korea and Japan, said Andrew Krepenivich of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a nonpartisan group specializing in military strategy issues.

US would never target Chinese Cities US would concentrate on Airfields, Supply Depos, and Naval Ships to shut China out, Of course there is always going to be the mistake of a cruise missile going off route and landing in someones backyard,

In ww2 and some earlier wars thats what they did was fly over drop bombs and hope they hit the right spot, thats why the people who lived in cities used thick heavy curtains to shut out any light coming from their house, so bombers above couldnt see the target, but with guided weapons china can shut the lights of on the aircraft hangers and it still wont matter

Why would the US target their cities? First objective would be to destroy all military related weapons and command sites.

If the US attacked to defend Taiwan, they would go for the units involved in the actual fighting FIRST, and then after missile sites that could launch missiles into Taiwan. They would only need to eliminate the ability to invade Taiwan, not go after all the cities, and military bases. Just the military units involved in the fighting.

Part of ANY defense department, is to make sure that the military is ready for any and all POTENTIAL enemies...

Just because we wargame and plan, doesn't mean an attack is emminent, it means someone is trying to get Congress to pony up and spend some dough on whatever it is the military thinks they need to address this perceived deficiency...

IMO the US has the capacity to strike China without getting struck itself. China is only a mid grade power as yet and its air force and navy are no match for even a quarter of the respective forces.

Besides China is not Russia and neither has Russia's tech level or its level of weaponry.

China has just 30 low-tech ICBM's and the US is sufficiently prepared to fend off those. Check out the US's anti-missile systems :

Aegis Ship-Based BMD
Airborne Laser (ABL) Development
Defense Support Program (DSP)
Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV)
Ground-Based Interceptor (GBI)
Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD)
High Altitude Airship (Blimp)
Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI)
Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS)
Near Field Infrared Experiment (NFIRE)
Patriot
Patriot Advanced Capability-2 (PAC-2)
Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3)
Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX)
Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS)
Space-Based Infrared System-High (SBIRS-High)
Space-Based Laser (SBL)
Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL)
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)

and this is just the de-classified part. Can you imagiene the black projects.

The US cannot survive a Russian attack but can take a Chinese nuke attack with ease.

If the US attacks a nuclear country like China it will not be the end of the world but the end of China with an unscratched USA.

If the US strikes first with all its delivery systems and all its force it might finish China's air, ground and sea defences within a week.

China will be defeated before it can think of a retaliation.

Why do you think the US is the worlds larger spender of defence for over a decade by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar ?

Hyping Chinese Espionage

With little evidence and flawed logic, the Cox Report has concluded that China, exploiting purloined U.S. nuclear weapons design information, can now match U.S. nuclear weapons technology and emerge as a major nuclear threat to the United States. The report, presented in three lavishly illustrated volumes suitable for coffee table display, is clearly designed to hype a new Chinese nuclear missile threat rather than objectively examine the extent and implications of alleged Chinese nuclear espionage. Whatever the truth about the extent of the espionage, this extreme worst-case assessment is grossly misleading and threatens rational U.S. diplomatic and defense policy toward Beijing.

The report's case rests primarily on a reference in a classified Chinese document to certain aspects of the design of the Trident D-5 missile's W-88 thermonuclear warhead, which indicates Chinese access to classified information from an unidentified source. However, Cox Committee member Representative John Spratt (D-SC), in an act of considerable political courage, has revealed the paucity of evidence supporting the report's stark conclusions and pointed out that the Cox Committee had no evidence that the Chinese had actually obtained any blueprints or detailed engineering specifications on the W-88 or any other U.S. thermonuclear weapon. This important conclusion was also reached by the intelligence community in its damage assessment of the material presented in the classified version of the report.
