This is just breaking...

Some UN officials have alledged that the US may be holding prisoners aboard 'prison ships' that are on the high seas:
sg.news.yahoo.com...

"The UN has learned of "very, very serious" allegations that the United States is secretly detaining terrorism suspects in various locations around the world, notably aboard prison ships, the UN's special rapporteur on terrorism said.
While the accusations were rumours, rapporteur Manfred Nowak said the situation was sufficiently serious to merit an official inquiry.
"There are very, very serious accusations that the United States is maintaining secret camps, notably on ships," the Austrian UN official told AFP, adding that the vessels were believed to be in the Indian Ocean region.
"They are only rumours, but they appear sufficiently well-based to merit an official inquiry," he added."

Questions...
Is the UN going to initiate an investigation based on rumors alone? Could this lead to a scenario where the Un can make any 'rumor-based' allegations it wants if it is looking for some way to investigate the US?

Well, if it's true, what are they gonna do? They are going to deal with it the same way they are delaing with Guantanamo, and do nothing.

Its probably not true, and if it was it is going to quickly be covered up by the united states.

The only prob I have with this report is that as the report states:

While the accusations were rumours, rapporteur Manfred Nowak said the situation was sufficiently serious to merit an official inquiry.
"They are only rumours, but they appear sufficiently well-based to merit an official inquiry," he added.

There is no attempt to qualify the well-based information. Wonder if it came from MI6 or the Spy agency???
The thing is though, If you took the accusers to every ship in the US military, to all the ships of the various coalition forces; showed them satellite pix, show them radar and sonar data, they will only respond that the US is playing a shell game.

I hope we do have prison ships.

Keep these prisoners locked up a dark, damp, cramped little room on board a ship and never let them see the night of day again.

Here's a source of the rumor..

PRISON ships holding Osama bin Laden's most trusted lieutenants were given an hour's warning of the tsunami.

The terrorists were aboard the vessels, anchored off British-owned island Diego Garcia, 1000 miles south of India.

Staff were alerted to the tsunami and had around an hour to batten down the hatches aboard the eight ships, whose detainees include bin Laden henchmen Khalid Sheik Mohammed, Ramzi Binasshibh and Abu Zubaida.

It's not known if the boats rode out the killer waves.

Diego Garcia is a key 15-mile stretch of land leased to the US military. They used it for bombing runs on Iraq and Afghanistan.

They currently use it as a holding and interrogation centre for suspected terrorists. Interrogators are not subject to US government rules on interviewing suspects.

And what if they aren't guilty?

If that is the case then QuietSoul then is one of the most ridiculous rumours that I have heard in awhile.
Let's break this down a bit hear:
The US Navy has a total of eight ships in that area, note, that is the exact number of ships that are reported by the US navy as being based out of the rock

The Navy has eight ships active in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and officials said none reported any damage from Sunday’s disaster.

Second problem..... where is the best place in the world to be when a tsunami such as what occured Boxer day is..... at sea! There have been numerous reports of fisherman from the hardest hit areas who were not even aware of what had occured until they headed for shore.

European and Pacific Stars & Stripes
I sincerely hope that this is not what the UN is basing thier accusations on.

For those who need some information on the rock

Where in the World Is Diego Garcia?

Here is a good article by MSNBC on DG and the tsunami

Well if the UN is looking to lose the remainder of their credibility this is a good way to do it.

Apparently "rumors" are now just cause to go public with accusations that the US government holds prisoners on boats.

You heard HIM. The official himself said "rumors" not me. HE himself admits no real evidence at all, yet feels the need to go public with it.

So going public with accusations before one shred of evidence exists is fine.

Gotcha. Now that's credible.

Yes I hear the same rumors but with a twist that it was foreign captives in other military bases of the US abroad.

Action from rumors is a policy started by the US anyway. Isn't that why they are in Iraq right now?

Go on UN, pre-empt America on a rumor that may or may not be true, you know the US did it to you.
