well it will be upgraded to keep it a fromidable plane till its replacement takes its place.

Upgradation features :

>Integration of new standards of air defence missiles onto F3, namely AMRAAM AIM-120C5 and ASRAAM FOC2.
>Extension to ASRAAM carriage life through an environmental assessment programme.
>Enhancement of the air defence missile capability, particularly the displays, by a number of radar and main computer software changes.
>Introduction of a combination of new software and hardware to retain a Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) capability on the FJWOEU aircraft.

the F3's will still be in service for another 5 years or so as the eurofighters come on stream so i dont see any problem with giving them an upgrade.

£5mill + £25mill to see another 5yrs at least out of the F3?

Doesn't seem like a lot to me - given the staggering prices in the defence world.

Anyway, who knows it wouldn't be the first time British kit - or for that matter anybodies' kit - has been asked to go on longer than it's expected retirement date, maybe we'll see the F3 around longer than thought and these upgrades will come in very very handy.

- Naaa, the obvious choice is to flog them to Austrailia when the RAF is done with them; they need an ultra long loiter, heavly armed aircraft and Tornado F3 would be perfect.......for covering the gap of around 5 - 10yrs until Typhoons became available to take over!

My point is that the F3 really should keep it's air defense role with the UK RAF. In that the F3 has a massive range and now it can carry out the SEAD mission too. It's one very usefull bit of kit.

The Typhoon is very good but simply hasn't the range of the F3, and to be fair the F3 in BVR is very good get to target area fire your missiles and get home.

The F3 should retain a Air-defense role.

being sorted with conformal fuel tanks for the typhoon. That should help improve the range.
