Among the treasures of the Greek National Archaeological Museum in Athens are the remains of the most complex scientific object that has been preserved from antiquity. Actually, this has been discussed a number of times in this forum.

Would it surprise you to know that they Greeks of 2,600 years ago (not 2,000 from when this dates... 600 years before that) had gears and levers and machinery like prototype steam engines? Mind you, they weren't going to run any trains with it, but they were prototyping a lot of mechanical items like the common screw.
