Cover your WMD's and hide the kids, our favorite friend and enemy is conducting it's annual fly over to do a look see at our nuclear weapon sites.

I think we need to purchase big inflatable naked ladies and fly them over our missile silo's and weapons sites. I would love to see the looks on the Ruskies faces when they look at the photos. Boobies

WASHINGTON, June 20 (RIA Novosti, Arkady Orlov) - Russia will conduct fly-over and aerial photography of the United States under the "open-skies" agreement, the U.S. State Department has announced.

too costly , besides they like to have the thrill to have their plane shotdown and get into a cat fight with the US

j/k
i have no idea, i guess it's a better way for the US and Russia to become better friends.

Can we be certain that the Russian Planes are Not Carrying a Payload?

I mean, say they wanted to hit us... it wouldn't ever be easier than now, since we are inviting them in to do the flyover. What if, in retaliation for us blowing up IRAN reactor ... the Russians blow up 1 of ours.

I don't want my enemies to fly over my land to take pictures ... when they can just use Satillite Photos ... don't they have Google over there?

This is a little scary. Putin is former KGB. He is scary. Why agree to this?

are we that ignorant, or is it arrogence?

I'm guessing from the context of the phrase that it's some sort of military term to allow foreign military aircraft to have a fly over your airspace without question.

The concept of "mutual aerial observation" was initially proposed by President Eisenhower in 1955 to reassure each country that the other was not preparing to attack, but rejected by the suspicious Soviets. In 1989, there was sufficient trust for both sides as there was the beginning of glasnost and perestrojka.

Well to me yeah allowing foreign military planes to fly over the U.S. airspace without questing seems a bit fishy.
But as long as we get to do the same in return I guess its ok.

The State Department said an unarmed Tu-154 plane authorized under the agreement would arrive at Travis Air Force base, California, on Monday.

The plane will fly over 4,250 kilometers (about 2,600 miles) of U.S. terrain on a route chosen by Russia.

The State Department said Russian plane would be equipped with several optical cameras and that the United States would obtain copies of the pictures taken during the mission. The department also said that the Russian crew would be entitled to take shots of any point of the U.S. on the route coordinated by both parties. During the mission, which is being conducted jointly by Russia and Belarus, a U.S. Defense Department support group will be onboard the Tu-154.

No real threat, nonetheless ,that would be mutual suicide if any side did anything to the other

If it was up to me...I wouldn't let them fly over the US. However its not as bad as you think.

I dont really see the point of these flights though.

For the record: This isn't something new, the treaty went into action on January 1, 2002. Since then, this will be Russia's 3rd fly-over...which isn't to bad considering since then the US has flown over them 19 times.

A US escort team from the DTRA will accompany the Russians through out there stay...also being on-board the flight.

The aircraft is a Tu-154, which can carry optical, electroptical and radar systems, however all it states is that it will be equipt with an optical camera...so i'm assuming thats the only sensory package on board.

The US uses the OC-135B for there open skies flights.

Yeah, really I don't see a point to these fly over from a military point of view they are useless. The other side know your route, time, location they are even on board and even get the pictures you could get load more info from satellite flyby's. This to me seem purely political.

I was gonna say can't they check google maps but someone beat me to it.

I wonder if they are allowed over area's like Area 51, I can't see why they shouldn't since they just need to store anything in the hanger.

Theres a U.S escort I believe and, ofcourse if the Russians bombed us, we would hit back harder...

lol

The US escort is people in the aircraft...and not to be confused by escorted by other military jets.
