What an ugly, ugly ship - geez, and some people believe China actually poses a threat...
Well I just hope they keep playing with redundant russion hardware!

What are you talking about, that's the most beautiful ship I've ever seen!
And yeah China is not a threat, why's everybody so scared of us, just go about your business and leave us alone!

I’m not a big fan of the ski ramp design, so I’m going to have to agree its quite ugly.

China should developed Electro Magnetic catapults. Ski jumps reduce the max takeoff weight of carrier based planes so thats not good.

Well, why would anyone be a fan of a concept (the ski jump) that allows greater loads to be carried and less fuel to be burned on take off which increases the usefulness of your aeroplane? I mean, its such a silly idea isn't it.

I'd guarantee that US analysts feel differently. It really shouldn't be a surprise that China is moving in this direction. Indeed, they'd be fools not to. China is WELL on it's way to becoming the next major superpower in the world, even if with mostly aging equipment. Whether it's a 4 year old weapon, or a 40 year old weapon, it can still make you DEAD.

Personally, I think China is doing things (economically, and militarily) right on the ball, and if we continue our downward spiral (hastened by the re-election of the current dictator), we're going to see China surpass where the Russians were at the height of the Cold War....

I say lets wait for the Russian-Sino military exercise. It involves their navies and air forces, and I wouldn't be surprised if after that exercise, China asks Russia for some Su-33s, Su-25Ks, Tu-22s, Su-34s and a lot more information about carrier operation. Russia is said to be bringing its only carrier for the exercise. With Russia teaching China about carriers, it won't be long after Chinese carriers become a threat to any US CBGs operating in the Pacific.

Ok, 6 US CBG’s on the pacific and one undersized carrier will pose a threat to them? China still has a long way to go before it can pose a threat to the U.S. pacific fleet.

Multiply this by 3.

Westpoint,

Your thinking in terms of World War 2, you are gravely mistaken if you believe that there will EVER be Carrier vs Carrier battles, wether its china, russia or for that matter an european nation. That type of thinking died in the 50's.

China is a threat to the US, since when was a nation with nuclear weapons not been a threat? The US invaded Iraq for the "idea" that they had Bio weapons. The US said that Iraq was a threat, if a third world country with a barely operational military is a threat, why isn't a nation with a pretty good and improving armed forces?

Plus, Westpoint, you need to do some reading, the Chinese Airforce are a huge Threat to an American Carrier group, say you have about 6 AAM ships then the carrier with say 40/50 fighters, the chinese have a few thousand, wether they be old types etc, say around 40 missiles for each escort, thats 240 missiles available to shoot down hostile aircraft then about say another 240 missiles on the fighters, if they manage to get them up. Then lets say the chinese attack with every thing they got, say around 500 Attack aircraft with 2 exocet missiles each, then say 20 badgers pulling up the rear with say 6 to 8 sunburns so thats, what, a maxium of 1120 missiles heading for the Carrier group. If you don't think they are a threat, I worry about the future of the US military.

The Chinese will use their carrier in their backyard, I doubt that it would be called upon to attack a Carrier Battle Group, the chinese aren't stupid as much as some people would like to think so.

I was talking about their naval air arm, and their carrier program will not be threat to the US Navy and for along time to come.

And those pictures are entirely way too big resize those pictures.

1 word : Chinese force projection. If China ever fights an overseas war, which I doubt will happen anyway, the Carrier will boost her force projection capabilites by 100%. Westpoint, the US is not going to deploy 3 CBGs. That is just overkill for a country like Taiwan, if the US is even going to interfere.

As for 3 battlegroups, say if you had 200 aircraft attacking the battlegroup, say 180 fighter- bombers carrying 4 excocets each, and 20 H-6s carrying 10 Moskits each. that already equals about 900 ASMs on a total of 3 carriers and say 9 esort ships. Not a threat?

Their naval air arm currently SUCKS, but lets say 5 years down the line in 2010, the carrier is finished, you have about 25 Su-30MKK2/MKK3s armed with R-77s and Moskits, with about 15 Su-25K Naval Frogfoots also armed with R-77s and Moskits, which it will probably choose as their ground attack aircraft and buy from Russia, along with some Sunburns placed below the carrier flight deck. Still think PLAN's carrier is not a threat?

Listen most of those planes will get shot down before they launch their missile and the US carriers are being fitted with systems to replace the Phalanx that twill be able to defeat supersonic ant ship missile threats.

They are becoming a concern, but the yare not up to the threat level yet perhaps in coming yes they will be.

RSSM, RAM. These are made to counter the infamous SS-N-22 Moskits, Moskit is 70s-80s technology, Russia and China does have its new millenium counter parts. And RSSM and RAM is yet to be tested in real combat, you can say its effectiveness is yet to be decided.

Folks,
Barf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This whole topic has gone to crap with a bunch of little kids whining about who has the better what. Grow up.

You can bet your ass that in a shooting war, we (the US) will take some losses from the Chinese. They can overwhelm most of our defense capability with the large numbers of weapons that they can bring to bear.

I am not saying that the Chinese can defeat us, just that they can make it costly.

BTW, the day that POS carrier proves to be a threat to us you can bet that the next thing you will hear about it is that it was sunk the next day. You can almost guarntee she will have an SSN tail on her every time she goes out.l

yes a chiense carrier couldn't compete with american carriers. but when it comes to a american carrier attacking the chiense mainland dont think that they can succeed.

i wouldn't care less who has a better military i care more about economic progress

The propellers look like a couple of giant daisies LOL.

Those "daisies" operate with much more efficiency than normal 4, 6 or 8 bladed propellers. They provide more thrust, decreases fuel efficiency and is especially good when you plan to plant them on CVNs.
