Hundreds of assailants sweep Portugal beach, two hurt
Fri Jun 10, 2005 10:54 PM BST
LISBON (Reuters) - Hundreds of youths assaulted holiday bathers at one of Portugal's best-known beaches on Friday and at least two police were injured in the melee.
About 400 youths in gangs swept through the crowded beach at Carcavelos, an upscale suburb about 20 km (12 miles) west of Lisbon, attacking and robbing bathers out on the Portugal Day national holiday, police said in a statement.
Police in riot gear were called in to quell the disturbance. Four people were arrested and two officers were injured, police said.
Gang assaults on bathers are rare in Portugal, which enjoys relatively low crime.
