What did I see in the sky?

A year or two ago while I was waiting in the car because my brother was playing a Football match, I noticed this red sphere up in the sky. It was just sitting there not moving or anything, and it looked real high up. It started to move in an up-right direction then stopped again. I thought it might've just been a little balloon with helium in it but then it flew off really high into the sky. It didn't look like it burst or anything, it just jumped way up into the sky and disappeared in 2 seconds.
What could've it been?

It was in Australia, so if anyone here's from Australia and know where Spotswood Football ground is, well I was there.
