Huh? I'm getting confused.... now that coming to think of it, those tiles do look a bit flat, but all the light still matches. I just don't get it. Or, did you find a photo without the ERA tiles? If so, can you post it?

It looks awfully accurate to the real thing though. But I don't think the ERA tiles actually reflected the light of the surrounding environment.

I know that it is real photo with some computer generated tiles added in. It was made quite a while ago.

The label on the pic says "http://www.combat-sim.net/". I just checked it out and it is a computer game site.

Well, basically the Overlord is too heavy. Most roads or bridges would not accomodate it. If you want a modern day example similar to the Overlord idea but a lot lighter of course, then look at the Merkava, heavy armor, slow moving but high survivability.

Yeah but that thing can take tons of airstrikes..and they act as meat shields..

Here you go; a real pic of the Type-98 ERA tiles:

In 2002 the U.S. intelligence predicted that the PLA is expected to deploy 1,800 Type 96 MBTs by 2005, but this figure was reduced to 1,500 in 2003. Meanwhile, the PLA just recently deployed 300 Type-98 MBTs. My prediction is that the Type-96 is going to be the new Chinese standard issue MBT, with the Type-98 only issued to Elite or Rapid Reaction forces.

Is this what you mean?

It had much more firepower than regular tanks, it had a much lower silouette, and it was better armoured, well...

But against which enemy would it have had to be used????

As there is nobody, they didn't mass-produce it..

How heavy was it? I was thinking of a German design, probably WWII.

And the gun caliber? It is supposed to be 2 280mm guns. And around 40+ tons? Most modern MBTs are 50-60+ tons!

On June 23rd of 1942, Dir. Dip. Ing. Grote (along with Dr.Hacker) from the Ministry of Armament, who was responsible for the production of U-Boots suggested the development of a tank with a weight of 1000 tons. Adolf Hitler himself expressed interest in this project and allowed Krupp to go ahead with it. Project was designated as Krupp P 1000 (Ratte - Rat). This "land cruiser" would be 35 meters long, 14 meters wide and 11 meters high. P 1000 would be equipped with 3.6 meters wide tracks per side made of three 1.2 meters tracks, similar to those used in excavators working in coalmines. It was planned to power P 1000 with two MAN V12Z32/44 24 cylinder Diesel marine engines with total power of 17000hp (2 x 8500hp) or with eight Daimler-Benz MB501 20 cylinder Diesel marine engines with total power of 16000hp (8 x 2000hp). According to the calculations it would allow P 1000 to travel at maximum speed of 40km/h. P 1000 would be armed with a variety of weapons such as: two 280mm gun (naval gun used in Scharnhorst and Gneisenau warships), single 128mm gun, eight 20mm Flak 38 anti-aircraft guns and two 15mm Mauser MG 151/15 gun.

This is the tank comparison between the P.1000 against the Maus which is a 200 ton WWII German prototype tank.

Both are good stuff, look for it, I remember I came across something even bigger than that but I can't seem to find it.

again an pic of this really small thingy, compared to the WWII stuff:

I think such weapons will never be mass produced, building more smaller tanks will be better...

the vehicle is highly maneuvrable, it is as good as a turret, to drive with one track forward, and with the other one backwards, so you can use the whole vehicle as turret (but in the big tank battles, it was designed for, the masses would matter, not how exact all those would be)

[edit]
If you mean ratte, yes Ratte has unlike VT-1/2 a turret

One problem I see in Ratte is that to fire at tanks with a lower silloute, Ratte would have to aim lower, and since Ratte is so big, that could be a problem, maybe having a minimum range of 100 meters or so.

the hindu-arabic numbering system (which is from the middle east) is now universally used for numeracy. The chinese would know their traditional numbering system, but its pretty obvious that any modern country (such as china) would also use the hindu-arabic system for a variety of reasons (commerce, science etc)

Other than an untested laser system, what makes it so special.

It looks similar to a T-72 to my untrained eye, autoloader perhaps ?
