Serial numbers confirmed into the 300's now and apparently there is a new program underway to upgrade the type-98G even more

Question : Why does China use English numbers on its tanks when the majority of its population and army (i assume) are unacquainted with the language and its numbers

300 Type 98's...whom can china use them on ??

Taiwan is seperated by vast areas of sea and the border with India has the himalayas and is not motorable for tanks and a war with Russia or Mongolia is very unlikely.

Does this mean preperation for an America invasion ??

china is not going to attack anyone. these tanks are for defence. they are with the 38th and 39th group army.(or is that the t-96)

china needs tanks to protect its capital.

if an army lands in tianjin china needs a strong armoured force to destroy it before it reaches the capital.

This happened in the Box Rebellion. the western forces by-pasted the rest of china and just landed at tianjin with a very strong force and there was no strong chinese army present and the capital fell with in days.

They would need more than 300 for that.

Lets say the Type-98 is just a tech demostrator. It will probably not enter service even with elite units, maybe a few field trials, but thats it. Look at the armor, China could easily build quite a few good composites, but they fitted steel instead.

Nah its not steel, its actually 3 layers of defence. First layer is steel, second layer is indegnous composite material and in Type-98G, it has new ERA. But yes, its not entering PLA in huge numbers, just a few hundred until something better comes out that could outdo M1A2 and be at the same level as the FCS but thats years to come though.

But yes, new Chinese tanks should appear before or at the 2009, October 1 army evaluation they do every 10 years since the establishment of PRC as a country. I can't wait until that day, man, reveal a few secrets, show the stuff that people didn't know we had.

It would be cool if they had developed a laser which could zap rockets and infantry like that on the Paladin tank in Generals. Oh well....too much gaming...bah!

would u imagine the Chinese to design a tank equivalent to the Overlord from the game in the future? i mean two barrels possibly 140 or 150 mm guns.

There is a reason why those tanks are not being designed... There was this german tank designed to have 2 280mm naval guns. Luckily, it never left the drawing board or would have been an enormous waste of funds.

Well, basically the Overlord is too heavy. Most roads or bridges would not accomodate it. If you want a modern day example similar to the Overlord idea but a lot lighter of course, then look at the Merkava, heavy armor, slow moving but high survivability.

This image has had computer modification. It has been talked about before. Those ERA tiles are not real but computer generated.
