I think the united states should build maglev trains. This would be like 100x more economic, and enviromentally safe. It would also be faster. The europeans have done it and loved it. This is like the same idea that someone had for a transcontinental canal. We already have a transcontinental railroad, why not put a transcontinental maglev system.

Let's have a look on how the US economy functions:

Every family owns 2-4 cars/SUV's/trucks
The auto industry banks on this fact.

For these cars to run we need roads
The construction companies come in here.

For these cars to runs we need gas stations.
This is where the gas companies come in.

The gas companies need crude oil.
This is where Halliburton/Texaco comes in.

These companies need oil fields.
This is where Iraq/Mid-East and war comes in.

You need weapons to wage a war.
This is where Lockheed/ Raytheon and other defense companies come in.

The defense companies need war for there sales to pick up.
This is where Fox news comes in.

The defense companies need more war for more profits.
This is where CIA and military comes in.

The CIA and military needs gas and energy for its massive infrastructure.
The gas companies come in again. ~sigh

If we built the trains, we would need less cars (poof goes the auto industry).
If we needed less cars, poof goes the gas/oil industry.
Then poof goes the defense industry...
And, down goes the Economy...
And, down goes the country...

O...For the want of a nail a kingdom was lost...

We'd still need cars, i dont see why not. im talking about like long travel and transporting oil and stuff like that. It might destroy the airline industry, but no one cares. Besides Europe has the maglevs and their economy is better than ours.

Maglev is really only useful for passenger or commuter traffic. Frieght can be shipped via LTL or Trcukers, while otehrs can use rail. (THe place where I work has a loading dock positioned next to a railroad, and we get rail shipments about once a week)

The main reason is becasue of the vast infrastructure of the Airlines taht we have compared to any otehr country in the world... not to metion we have a rather phnomical road system.

Amtrak is living on government handouts cause they cannot get anyone to use thier train system. Why would a maglev rail come in?

I would love to have a Maglev train in the US but in reality we dont need one.. and if we could, there would be so much political bickering as competing industries try to block the mag rail system

It would take a presidential mandate to accomplsih it with the backing of both Congress and the House before it is ever reality
