Delivering a speech on the 25th anniversary of its founding, former CNN owner Ted Turner said that the network should focus on core news and not "the pervert of the day". CNN has recently fallen behind FOX news in the ratings. Turner stated that CNN should have a more environmental and international focus to distance itself from local news outlets.

CNN should cover international news and the environment, not the "pervert of the day," network founder Ted Turner said Wednesday as the first 24-hour news network turned 25.

Turner, an outspoken media mogul who started CNN in 1980 but no longer controls the network, said he envisioned CNN as a place where rapes and murders that dominated local news wouldn't be emphasized, but he's seeing too much of that "trivial news" on the network he created, now second in ratings to Fox News Channel.

"I would like to see us to return to a little more international coverage on the domestic feed and a little more environmental coverage, and, maybe, maybe a little less of the pervert of the day," he said in a speech to CNN employees outside the old Atlanta mansion where the network first aired.

CNN was really the pioneer in this genre, but has seemed to have lost its way in recent years. Some of that stems from the MTV'esq trend towards sound bites and hazy facts presented in rapid fire fashion. FOX news excels in this type of offering. CNN should stay focused on providing complete in depth coverage that appeals to its core audience. Its tried to find a middle ground that is not working anymore.

what? Not massive day to day coverage of "runaway brides", speculation about another disgusting trial involving a pop star, or a three to four page spread regarding the identity of a political tattletale over 40 years irrelevant?

Scary. Next he's gonna be preaching for non-biased, spin free, truth. One that focusses on both sides of an issue, and the positives and negatives of any situation.

naw, it'll never work. Not "entertaining" enough. More bewbies! More fluff! More speculation instead of investigation! More stock footage aired instead of live film! And don't forget camera angles to exaggerate or minimize crowd size or damage from disasters.

If he honestly believes what he's saying, it has got to suck bigtime seeing the system you built turn into the very type of news system you tried to differentiate from.
