S.Korean Foreign Minister Applauds Bush's Diplomacy Vow (moved from ATSNN), page 1

South Korea's Foreign Minister, Ban Ki-moon, has applauded President Bush's vow to continue with diplomatic talks with North Korea. "We expect (Bush's remarks) will work favorably in creating an atmosphere for the peaceful resolution of the six-party talks," Bush stopped short of saying that military action is out of the question but reiterated his efforts to resolve the matter peacefully.

SEOUL, South Korea - President Bush's pledge to use diplomacy to resolve tensions over North Korea's nuclear programs was applauded by South Korea on Wednesday, but the communist North kept up its complaints about Washington's stance.

Citing U.S. pressure about its nuclear program, North Korea asked the South to reduce from 70 to 30 the number of officials it sends to Pyongyang this month for a celebration of the historic 2000 summit between the two Koreas, South Korea's Unification Ministry said.

This is the expected tone of diplomatic speak on the eve of a visit from the President to Seoul. The comments would also be an attempt to smooth over the recent student anti-US protests that took place outside the American Army base in South Korea.

If the United States has reaffirmed its recognition of North Korea's sovereignty and pledged not to invade I wish they would put it in writing. If they signed a non-agression pact with North Korea they have said they would give up all their nuclear weapons and lock up their reprocessing facility at Yongbyon.
