Iran claims to have successfully tested a new solid-fuel rocket motor for its Shahab 3 medium range ballistic missile. The new rocket is more accurate, cheaper, and easier to use. The Shahab 3 can carry a nuclear warhead and is capable of hitting Israel, Iraq and other neighboring countries.

www.nytimes.com
TEHRAN, May 31 - Iran said Tuesday that it had successfully tested a solid-fuel motor for its medium-range ballistic missile known as Shahab 3, raising concerns that it could reach its enemies, including American forces in the region and Israel, with more precision.

Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani told state television the test was a success but did not say when it had been carried out.

"When you fill a missile with liquid, you have to use it quickly," he said. "With solid fuel, a missile can be stored for years. And in addition, it makes the missile more accurate and cheaper."

Iran's capabilities are becoming more menacing by the day. I just hope something is done to successfully stop their nuclear program before it delivers nukes in the hands of their present government.

Oh of course, they test a missile so they must be planning on destroying the World.

More scaremongering propaganda.

They're gearing up for war, but it could hardly be called "menacing".

Menacing would be a hostile country with the world's largest stockpile of WMD's and high tech weaponry, surrounding a country with minor military capabilities.

Oh wait... that would be us...

The Israeli's launched rockets into Lebanon just last month. Was that menacing? The Israeli army routinely violate Lebanese territory but thats acceptable isnt it?

That's a fair comment and the Israeli's probably will use it as justification for a first strike. Although I doubt anyone believes Iran would be dumb enough to attack Israel with the US on two of it's borders.

I think it's pretty much a forgone conclusion, Iran will be losing it's nuclear facilities soon and any military response they make will be used to justify a full scale invasion. If they're wise, they won't react at all and take it to the UN instead.

As they mentioned several times, with the purchase of the reactor, came the know-how of cloning the reactor. So if Iran is attacked, they can rebuild it fairly quickly, and they could gain the upper hand politically. If they are attacked they can argue in the UN that their rights under the NPT has been violated and it could get fairly ugly in international politics for US and Israel and Iran could be allowed to leave the NPT and with good reason. Its late so I got to sleep now and sorry if this post doesnt make sense, I tried tocontribute something but it seems like I am very sleepy. Good night.

Nuclear proliferation is a problem that's been considered and 'think-tanked' since the US lost it's position as the sole-possessor of such weaponry in the late 1940s.
As the nuclear-club expands, the dangers increase.

In the instance of Iran, added to the mix is the prospect of an Islamic Fundamentalist with a finger on the button. Not a pretty picture for those of us in the west.

The peril is very real.

Periwinkleblue, what basis do you have to say that apart from propaganda and scaremongering from the United States that's had a grudge against Iran since the 70's.

Pakistan is a muslim country where the people pretty much despise Americans. Its run by a military dictatorship but because its pro-American its all hunkydory. It even enjoys U.S military assistance and donations. Its also got the bomb, why isnt that a peril?

Cold hard fact of it is that the United States doesnt like Iran, Iran doesnt like the United States. Iran is sticking to the NPT and even if it did want to leave the NPT it could and the United States has no legal leg to stand on here.

Any action against Iran will be illegal, even with a UNSC resolution to back it up.

the best thing iran could do with a nuke is drill a hole into the oilfield they
share with iraq slide it down and detonate it .
no more oil=no more american/british interest

the best way to keep bears out your garden is not to have anything they
want there :-)

Blah, blah, blah, the bogey man's gonna get us, look he has rockets 'n stuff.

I'm getting tired of this.

Seriously, which government is the only one lately that's been invading sovereign countries, seeking to put weapons in space, and threatening to use nuclear weapons?

It might be only 2 minutes of hate, but the propaganda mill runs 24/7.

Good night, Emmanuel Goldstein.
