This story wasn't all that interesting at first since it appeared that shortly afterwards the man in question was freed, but today we found things didn't quite turn out that way.

May 10, 2005

Raja Nawaf Farhan al-Mahalawi, the newly appointed governor of Iraq’s Anbar province, was kidnapped by insurgents.

May 15, 2005

Insurgents have freed the governor of Iraq's rebellious Anbar province after kidnapping him last week, an Interior Ministry official said on Sunday.

May 31, 2005

The governor of Iraq's biggest province, who was kidnapped earlier this month, has been found dead along with his militant captors after a clash with U.S. forces, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.

BTW: A thread already exists on the non-conspiratorial aspects of the incident at the below link:

Condoleezza Rice was visiting Iraq in mid-May. Something positive had to show up in the news there to make her stay look better. Didn't turn out that way though.

A) The news of his release were bogus, which is improbable since many peope knowing him (journalists, colleages, relatives) could verify them.
B) was indeed released after a loyalty shift, then killed by US forces
